DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2022) – Despite a combined 14 saves from sophomore Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to NE10 foe Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-4, 3-4 NE10) have dropped three games in a row and suffer their first loss at home this season. The Hawks (7-5, 6-2 NE10) have won two games in a row and defeat Mercy for the seventh straight time.
Junior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) had a team-high two shots on goal and junior Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had a game-high two defensive saves. Junior Flynn Kirk (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and freshman Reagan Lane (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) also had a defensive save. Viscione made eight saves in 36:41 minutes of action with four goals allowed to take the loss. Giordano made six saves without allowing goal in 23:19 minutes of action.
Saint Anselm was led by Maggie Malloy who had three goals and an assist and by Maddie Davis who also scored. Mackenzie McConnell made three saves in 45 minutes of action to earn the win.
Viscione made three early saves in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless. Davis made it 1-0 in the 8th minute of action, off an assist from Malloy, following a penalty corner. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Viscione stopped three more shots in the second quarter before Malloy scored in the 26th minute to make it 2-0. Saint Anselm headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Saint Anselm made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute when Malloy found the back of the cage. The Hawks scored their final goal of the game in the 36th minute when Malloy netted her third goal of the game to make it 4-0.
Giordano made six saves late in the third quarter and in the fourth quarter to keep Saint Anselm from scoring again.
Saint Anselm held a 26-8 edge in shots and a 22-4 edge in shots on goal. Saint Anselm held an 11-4 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 25th when they host Adelphi at 3:30 p.m.
