DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2022) – Despite a goal from junior Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to Frostburg State University in a Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-6) fail to build off their win from yesterday, while the Bobcats (8-10) end their season with a win.
Schreck now has four goals on the year and graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had seven saves in the first 39:32 minutes of action to take the loss. Freshman Molly Magnifico (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) made her collegiate debut in net, making two saves in 13:12 minutes of action. Junior Victoria Devlin (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) added a defensive save.
Frostburg State was led by Femke Hofkamp who had two goals and an assist and by Paige Leitzel and Emilie Bonhivert who also scored. Madison Manalansan made a game-high nine saves in 40:19 minutes of action to earn the win.
Viscione made the game's first save in the 3rd minute of action and Manalansan made three saves of her own before the Bobcats scored in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Hofkamp scored her first of the day off an assist from Macy Layfield. The duo of Hofkamp and Layfield made it 2-0 just under two minutes later and Frostburg State headed into the second quarter up, 2-0.
Manalansan stopped four shots early in the fourth quarter and Maddie Wallis stopped a Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) shot to keep the game at 2-0. Schreck finally got Mercy on the scoreboard in the 24th minute after an Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) shot was stopped by Manalansan to make it 2-1. The score remained 2-1 heading into halftime.
Leitzel made it 3-1 in the 34th minute and Bonhivert increased the Bobcats lead to 4-1 with a goal in the 35th minute. Neither team would score again and Frostburg State came away with the 4-1 win.
Frostburg State held a 17-13 edge in shots and a 14-13 edge in shots on goal. Frostburg State held a 15-10 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, November 2nd when they play at Molloy at 3:30 p.m.
