Fitzgerald Records a Goal and an Assist as Field Hockey Earns 3-1 Win at Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 5, 2022) – Powered by a goal and an assist from junior Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over NE10 foe Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday night at Jess Dow Field.

The Mavericks (2-1, 1-1 NE10) start 2-1 for the first time in program history and are off to their best NE10 start ever. The Owls (3-5, 1-2 NE10) have dropped three of their last four meetings to Mercy.

Fitzgerald scored her first collegiate goal and added her first assist of the season. Junior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) scored her first goal of the season and graduate student Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) netted her second goal of the season. Junior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) had a game-high two assists and now has a team-high three assists. Graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made two saves to earn the win.

Southern Connecticut State was led by Abbey Kellerman who scored and by Kaitlyn Parent who had a game-high six saves to take the loss.

Viscione made two saves in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless heading to the second quarter.

The Mavericks opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Sacco scored off a pass from Fitzgerald to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the 28th minute when Kellerman scored to tie the game at 1-1. The score remained tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Rosenfeld gave the Mavericks the lead for good in the 34th minute when she scored following a pass from Palladino after a Fitzgerald penalty corner, making it 2-1. The score remained 2-1 after three quarters of play.

Fitzgerald gave the Mavericks an insurance goal in the 56th minute when she scored following a pass from Palladino after a scramble in front to make it 3-1. Mercy would hold on for the win without allowing another Owl shot on goal.

Mercy held a 17-6 edge in shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 12-4 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, October 7th when they host AIC at 4 p.m.
