DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2022) – Powered by two goals and an assist from junior Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 4-2 win over NE10 foe American International College on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-1, 2-1 NE10) start 3-1 overall and 2-1 in NE10 play for the first time in program history and have won four of their last five meetings against the Yellow Jackets (2-8, 1-4 NE10).
Schreck recorded her first two goals of the season and added her first assist of the season. Graduate student Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) scored her team-leading third goal of the season and dished out her second assist of the year. Junior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) netted her second goal of the season and junior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) produced her team-leading fourth assist of the season. Junior Flynn Kirk (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) had a defensive save and graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made six saves to earn the win.
AIC was led by Pej'ae Parent and Logan Shunney who both scored. Emily French made four saves in the final three quarters to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the 10th minute when Rosenfeld found the back of the cage after a long shot that found its way past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Less than a minute later Schreck made it 2-0 when her shot just made it past the goal line after a pass from Palladino. Mercy held a 2-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Viscione made three saves in the second quarter to keep Mercy ahead 2-0 heading into halftime.
AIC trimmed the Mavericks lead to 2-1 with a Parent goal in the 42nd minute. The score stayed 2-1 after three quarters of play.
The Yellow Jackets would tie the game at 2-2 in the 49th minute on a Shunney goal. Schreck responded just over a minute later with her second goal of the day after a cross from Sacco to make it 3-2. Sacco gave the Mavericks an insurance goal with just under a minute left following an assist by Schreck to put Mercy up, 4-2. The Mavericks would not surrender another shot on goal to come away with the win.
Mercy held a 14-11 edge in shots and shots on goal were tied at 9-9. AIC held an 11-3 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 11th when they host Pace at 3 p.m.
