Game Preview: No. 4 Men's Soccer Hosts No. 5 Davis & Elkins in NCAA Tournament Second Round Matchup on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2022) – The No. 4 seed Mercy College men's soccer team hosts No. 5 seed Davis & Elkins College in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship Second Round on Saturday, November 12th at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off their second ECC Championship in three seasons after defeating Molloy in penalty kicks on Sunday. The Mavericks are making their third NCAA Tournament appearance in four seasons and fifth appearance overall. Mercy won their fifth ECC Championship on Sunday and are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2019. The Mavericks look to win their first NCAA Tournament game since 2018 and advance to the Third Round for the first time. Mercy is hosting an NCAA Tournament game for the first time. The Mavericks went 7-0-2 at home this season. Sophomore Eirik Elvestad was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week, freshman Mateo Bacigalupo was tabbed Rookie of the Week and Baptista was named to the Honor Roll on last week. Sophomore Martin Penafiel was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week the week prior. On October 11th, Elvestad was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen was tabbed Rookie of the Week. Mercy qualified for the ECC Championship for the fourth time in five seasons. The Mavericks advanced to the Final of the ECC Championship for the third time in four seasons. Mercy is 0-1 against Davis & Elkins with the lone meeting coming in 1986. Mercy is ranked No. 13 nationally in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll. ECC Defensive Player of the Year senior Benjamin Van Buren was named to the ECC Honor Roll on September 19th and has been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week once. Van Buren scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute of Mercy's season-opening win over Saint Rose on August 25th and scored the game-winning goal in the win over D'Youville on Saturday. He has three goals. Third Team All-ECC selection sophomore Luis Silva has a team-high six goals and is second on the team with 14 points. Freshman Nicolás Cerda was named ECC Rookie of the Week on September 6th and has two goals and an assist. Third Team All-ECC selection senior David Breitenbach has five goals and 11 points and freshman Mateo Bacigalupo has three goals on the season, recording the game-winning goal in Mercy's win over New Haven on August 28th and against Bridgeport on October 26th. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll on August 29th. Second Team All-ECC selection junior Daniel Rodriguez has a team-high-tying 13 points on the year on four goals and five assists. Junior Carlos Fernandes has a goal and an assist on the year and ECC Rookie of the Year Schilbred-Eriksen has six assists. Third Team All-ECC recipient sophomore Martin Penafiel also has two goals and two assists. First Team All-ECC selection and the ECC Championship Most Outstanding Player Vasco Baptista recorded his first collegiate goal in the win over Daemen on September 10th and has a team-high 15 points on four goals and a team-high seven assists. Third Team All-ECC honoree senior Marco Passera has scored two goals. ECC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Elvestad is 11-1-5 in goal with 54 saves, a .794 save percentage and 0.83 goals-against average. Freshman Simon Steffensen is 1-1 in net with eight saves, a .727 save percentage and 1.20 goals-against average. Mercy enters the 2022 season looking to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four seasons and qualify for the ECC Championship for the fourth time in five seasons under seventh-year head coach Pedro Velazquez. The Mavericks went 9-5-2 last season and missed qualifying for the ECC Championship due to a tiebreaker. Mercy has posted a winning record in each of Velazquez's five seasons as head coach. The Mavericks are looking to win their first ECC Championship since 2019 and were picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll. Mercy's leading returning scorer is Dalmau who had nine points on four goals and one assist in 2021. Breitenbach also returns after posting two goals and three assists. Penafiel returns after recording two goals and two assists and Van Buren and Kevin Aguilar return on defense.

Scouting the Senators

Davis & Elkins is coming off a penalty kick loss to Notre Dame (Ohio) on Thursday. The Senators have qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and advanced to the Sweet 16 last season. Davis & Elkins College is in Elkins, West Virginia and are a member of the Mountain East Conference. Davis & Elkins is ranked No. 12 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. The Senators have scored an impressive 80 goals in 18 games this season. Davis & Elkins is led by Christhian Bosquez who has a team-high 30 points on a team-high 14 goals with two assists. Daniel Cerezo is second on the team with 24 points on 10 goals and four assists and Kevin Zapata also has 24 points on 10 goals and four assists. Manuel Castrejon has 23 points on seven goals and nine assists. Dominique Castano also has a team-high nine assists and Soshi Fujioka has eight assists. Beltran Fernandez is 10-2-1 in goal with 27 saves, a .750 save percentage and 0.69 goals-against average. Viktor Sulc is 5-0 in goal with five saves, a .714 save percentage and 0.40 goals-against average.
