WORCESTER, Mass. (Nov. 5, 2022) – Despite a game-high 10 saves from graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to NE10 foe No. 6 Assumption University on Saturday afternoon at Brian Kelly Stadium.
The Mavericks (6-7, 5-6 NE10) fall below .500 overall and in NE10 play, while the Greyhounds (13-3, 10-1 NE10) have won five games in a row.
Viscione made a game-high 10 saves in 38:20 minutes of action to take the loss. She now has 401 saves for her career becoming the second Maverick in program history to reach the mark. Freshman Molly Magnifico (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) stopped two shots in the final 21:40 minutes of action. Junior Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) had a team-high three shots on goal and junior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) added two shots on goal.
Assumption was led by Chloe Kaeller who had two goals and an assist and by Lily Daly who scored two goals. Lucy Malia also scored and Kylie Gargiulo made three saves in 38:20 minutes of action to earn the win.
The Greyhounds opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the game when Daly scored to make it 1-0. Both goalkeepers made two saves in the first 13 minutes of action and Viscione added two more saves before Malia scored to give Assumption a 2-0 lead with less than a minute to play in the opening quarter. The Greyhounds headed into the second quarter with a 2-0 lead.
Viscione made two more saves in the second quarter before Kaeller scored following a penalty corner to give the hosts a 3-0 lead in the 23rd minute. The score remained 3-0 heading into halftime.
Viscione stopped an additional two shots in the third quarter before Daly scored again in the 36th minute to give Assumption a 4-0 lead. Kaeller netted her second goal of the game in the 39th minute to give the Greyhounds a 5-0 lead and Assumption held on for the 5-0 win.
Assumption held a 31-10 edge in shots and a 17-6 edge in shots on goal. Assumption held a 9-3 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, November 9th when they host New Haven at 2 p.m.
