DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2022) – Powered by a game-high two goals from junior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and a game-high 13 saves from graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 3-1 win over Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) foe University of New Haven on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-7, 6-6 NE10) continue their best start in program history and tie the school record for wins in a season set in 2016 and 2017. Mercy also doubles their previous school record win total for NE10 wins and defeat the Chargers (8-9, 8-4 NE10) for the first time since 2017.
Rosenfeld scored a game-high two goals and now has four goals on the year. Graduate student Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) added her eighth goal of the season and fifth assist of the year. Sacco ties the single-season school record for goals. Junior Kate Ringstad (Woodstock, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) added her fifth assist of the season. Junior Flynn Kirk (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) recorded two defensive saves and Viscione made 13 saves to earn the win.
New Haven was led by Erin Smith who scored a goal and by Keira Integlia who made six saves.
Sacco gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game following a rebound off an Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) shot. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the first quarter following saves from Viscione and Kirk.
Viscione made six saves in the second quarter without allowing a goal to keep Mercy ahead 1-0 at halftime.
Rosenfeld made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute when she found the back of the cage, off a Sacco pass, after a Rosenfeld penalty corner. Viscione made a late save in the quarter to give Mercy a 2-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The score stayed 2-0 until the 51st minute when Smith scored after a penalty corner to make it 2-1. The Mavericks quickly responded with a goal of their own to make it 3-1. Rosenfeld deflected in a Ringstad shot attempt after a Rosenfeld corner to give Mercy an insurance goal. Viscione made three late saves in the quarter to prevent New Haven from scoring again, giving the Mavericks the 3-1 win.
New Haven held a 21-10 edge in shots and a 16-9 edge in shots on goal. New Haven held an 11-8 edge in penalty corners.
