Game Preview: No. 3/5 Men's Lacrosse Plays at Wilmington on Saturday

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off an impressive 21-5 win over Georgian Court on Tuesday. The Mavericks were led by senior Brady Kearnan who had a career-high 10 points on four goals and six assists. Graduate student Dominic Scorcia added four goals and one assist and graduate student Matt Eccles had three goals.

·        On Monday, Scorcia was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and senior Tommy Umano was tabbed ECC Defensive Player of the Week. Senior Jack Gibbons and junior PJ Argiros were tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named Co-Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and junior Justin Gerdvil was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 9-1 during the 2021 season, winning their second straight ECC Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 5 in the USILA Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        Mercy is 34-4 in their last 38 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season. The Mavericks are also 10-2 on the road during that stretch.

·        Mercy has had nine straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last six seasons the tournament was held.

·        The Mavericks are 1-0 all-time against Wilmington. The two teams last met on March 28, 2021 with Mercy earning a 15-2 win.

·        Mercy is looking to start 3-0 for the second straight season.

·        Head Coach Jordan Levine is just four wins shy of 100 for his career. He currently holds a 96-37 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Kearnan leads the Mavericks with 11 points on four goals and a team-high seven assists. Scorcia is second on the team with 10 points on a team-high seven goals to go with three assists on the year. The graduate student is five points shy of 200 for his career.

·        Eccles is third on the team with six points on four goals and two assists. Senior Jack Gibbons had three goals in the opening game of the season against Saint Rose.

·        Sophomore Brody Caskenette and junior Robert Guglielmo both had four points on the year on two goals and two assists.

·        The defense is led by senior Sean Rigley who had a game-high three caused turnovers in the win over Saint Rose. Rigley was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. Gerdvil has two caused turnovers and eight ground balls on the year and sophomore Tyler Pjatak has a team-high four caused turnovers with five ground balls. Senior Jack Kipnes was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year prior to the 2020 season.

·        Argiros leads the team with 15 ground balls and is 24-of-34 on face-offs this season.

·        Umano is 2-0 in goal with 15 saves, a .577 save percentage and 7.26 goals-against average in 90:52 minutes of action.

·        Kearnan, Rigley, Gerdvil, Gibbons, Kipnes and Scorcia all earned Preseason All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse prior to this season.

Scouting the Wildcats

·        Wilmington is coming off a 26-4 win over Chowan in their season opener on February 19th. The Wildcats set a new school record for goals, scoring margin and shots in the win.

·        The Wildcats were picked second in the CACC Preseason Poll.

·        Wilmington went 5-4 last season and are coming off their first appearance in the CACC Tournament Championship Game in 2021.

·        The Wildcats are led by sophomore John Greene who was named CACC Defensive Player of the Week and was tabbed to the USILA Division II Team of the Week after leading the defense with three caused turnovers and six ground balls.

·        Sophomores Miles Crouse and Giovanni Marino both had nine points in the win over Chowan. Crouse recorded a team-high five assists with four goals and Marino had a team-high seven goals with two assists.

·        Junior Anton Mackey went 18-of-23 on face-offs with eight ground balls and junior Jason Roland made six saves to earn the win in goal.
