Scouting the Mavericks
· Mercy is coming off a 5-3 loss to No. 39 Franklin Pierce on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by freshman Jaden Caballero who went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a home run.
· Mercy was picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 18-11 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Mavericks set a school record with 14 ECC wins and had their first winning record overall since 1990.
· Caballero was named ECC Player of the Week last week and is hitting a team-high .424 with a team-high 14 hits, five runs, two home runs and a team-high-tying six RBI in eight games.
· Senior Jonathan Diforio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week last week and is 0-1 on the mound with a team-best 4.09 ERA in 11 innings pitched with six strikeouts. Freshman Scott Scheppy has pitched a team-high 12 innings and has six strikeouts.
· Graduate student Robert Wootten and senior Nikko Liguori were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll last week. Wootten has a team-high-tying six RBI on the year and is hitting .269 with a team-high two triples. Liguori is third on the team with five RBI and is second on the team with four runs.
· Junior Justin Glennerster has a home run and three RBI on the year and the reigning ECC Rookie of the Year junior Nolan Giblin is hitting .346 with three RBI and nine hits.
· Junior Anthony Burgio was named Second Team All-ECC last season and has pitched 8.1 innings this season with eight strikeouts and a 0-1 record. Junior Kevin Seckler is 1-1 on the bump in 9.2 innings with eight strikeouts in three appearances.
· Mercy earned their first win over a ranked team since 2018 after defeating No. 14 Goldey-Beacom on February 20th.
· The Mavericks are hitting .234 as a team and have an 8.60 team ERA through eight games.
· Mercy is looking to win their third straight matchup against Bloomfield.
· The Mavericks are facing Jefferson for the first time since 2012.
· Mercy looks to beat Southern Connecticut for the first time since 2013. The Mavericks have dropped eight straight contests to the Owls.
Scouting the Bears
· Bloomfield opened their season with 10-0 and 10-2 losses to East Stroudsburg on Sunday.
· The Bears will face Lincoln on Tuesday before playing Mercy on Wednesday.
· Bloomfield was picked fifth in the North Division of the CACC Preseason Poll after going 8-17 in 2021.
· The Bears are led by Jonas Espinal who is batting a team-high .571 with one double. Angel Murray is hitting .500 with three hits.
· Kevin Sanchez has one RBI on the year and Luis Ramirez and Elvis Lopez have both scored runs.
· The pitching staff is led by Bryan Guzman and Raymon Sarza who both are 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA in four innings pitched. Guzman has a team-high four strikeouts on the year.
Scouting the Rams
· Jefferson opened its 2022 season with four losses to Erskine on February 11th and 12th. The Rams will face Queens on Wednesday before facing Mercy on Thursday.
· The Rams were picked third in the South Division of the CACC Preseason Poll after going 23-11 in 2021. Jefferson advanced to the CACC Championship before falling to Dominican.
· Leading Jefferson at the plate is senior Arturo Figueroa who is hitting a team-high .364 with one RBI. Junior Zack Austin is hitting .357 with a team-high four RBI, three runs and has one home run.
· Sophomore Alex Gonzalez has three RBI and is hitting .308 and freshman Lucas DeStefano has one home run.
· Leading the pitching staff is sophomore Jem Sisco who is 0-1 on the mound with a 0.00 ERA in five innings with a team-high 11 strikeouts. Senior Patrick Hohlfeld is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA and eight strikeouts in five innings.
Scouting the Owls
· Southern Connecticut is coming off a 12-10 win over Chestnut Hill on Sunday. The Owls have opened their 2022 season with six straight wins.
· The Owls are currently ranked No. 4 in the NCBWA East Region Poll.
· Southern Connecticut was picked fifth in the NE10 Southwest Division Preseason Poll after going 8-10 last season.
· The Owls are led by senior Andrew Eng who is batting a team-high .450 with nine hits, nine runs and nine RBI. One-time NE10 Player of the Week senior Mike DeMartino is hitting .435 with a team-high 10 hits, 11 RBI and four doubles.
· Freshman Bill Sullivan is hitting .381 with a team-high 13 runs to go with three RBI and three doubles.
· The pitching staff is led by senior Nick Guarino is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings with 11 strikeouts. Freshman Steve Phillips is 2-0 on the mound with a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings with a team-high-tying 13 strikeouts. One-time NE10 Pitcher of the Week Tommy Hughes has pitched 6.1 innings of relief with no runs or hits allowed and has a team-high-tying 13 strikeouts.
