Scouting the Mavericks
· The Mavericks are coming off 5-4 and 2-1 losses to New Haven on Friday. Mercy was led by junior Nolan Giblin who hit a three-run home run in game one.
· Mercy was picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 18-11 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Mavericks set a school record with 14 ECC wins and had their first winning record overall since 1990.
· Freshman Jaden Caballero was named ECC Player of the Week on February 21st and is hitting .328 with a team-high 19 hits, nine runs, six stolen bases and two home runs to go along with nine RBI in 15 games.
· Senior Jonathan Diforio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on February 21st and is 0-2 on the mound with a team-best 5.32 ERA in 22.0 innings pitched with 10 strikeouts. Freshman Scott Scheppy has pitched 19.0 innings and has eight strikeouts.
· Graduate student Robert Wootten and senior Nikko Liguori were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on February 21st. Wootten has a team-high 10 RBI on the year with a team-high-tying two triples. Liguori is third on the team with five RBI and is second on the team with seven runs.
· Junior Justin Glennerster has a home run and three RBI on the year and the reigning ECC Rookie of the Year junior Nolan Giblin is hitting a team-high .333 with seven RBI, seven runs and 16 hits. Senior James Mattutat is tied for third on the team with five RBI.
· Freshman Alfred Hoti was named ECC Rookie of the Week on Monday and has four RBI in nine games.
· Junior Anthony Burgio was named Second Team All-ECC last season and has pitched 21.2 innings this season with a team-high 18 strikeouts, a 0-3 record and one save. Junior Kevin Seckler is 2-1 on the bump in 18.2 innings with 13 strikeouts in a team-high-tying five appearances.
· Mercy earned their first win over a ranked team since 2018 after defeating No. 14 Goldey-Beacom on February 20th.
· The Mavericks are hitting .244 as a team and have a 7.81 team ERA through 15 games.
Scouting the Setters
· Pace is coming off an 11-4 win over Dominican on Sunday, March 6th for their third straight win.
· Pace will face East Stroudsburg on Tuesday before hosting Mercy on Wednesday.
· The Setters were picked fourth in the NE10 Southwest Division Coaches' Poll after going 14-16 last season.
· Pace is ranked eighth in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll.
· The Setters have been led at the plate by freshman Matthew Rinaldi who is batting a team-high .357 with a team-high 10 hits and seven runs. He also has three RBI and two stolen bases. Senior Matt Almonte has a team-high seven RBI and three home runs and has five runs scored.
· Senior Andrew Primm is hitting .278 with four RBI and senior Luke Jacobi has five RBI and a team-high six stolen bases.
· The pitching staff is led by junior Christian Aich who has pitched a team-high-tying nine innings with eight strikeouts in two starts. He is 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA. Junior Patrick Gleason is 1-1 on the bump with a 4.00 ERA in two starts. He also has a team-high 14 strikeouts in nine innings.
Scouting the Bears
· The Bears are coming off a 14-12 loss to Southern Connecticut State on Saturday.
· Bloomfield will face Staten Island on Wednesday before hosting the Mavericks on Friday.
· Bloomfield was picked fifth in the North Division of the CACC Preseason Poll after going 8-17 in 2021.
· The Bears are led by Jonas Espinal who is batting .415 with seven doubles, eight stolen baes and 10 RBI. Justin Sanchez is hitting a team-high .486 with a team-high 14 RBI, five home runs and 11 runs.
· Tyree Bradley is hitting .349 with 10 RBI and two home runs and Justin Rivera is hitting .415 with 10 runs, five doubles and three RBI.
· The pitching staff is led by Bryan Guzman who has a team-best 3.95 ERA in 13.2 innings with 11 strikeouts and a 1-2 record. Raymon Sarza has pitched a team-high 15.1 innings and has a 5.87 ERA and a 1-2 record with 10 strikeouts.
