DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 16, 2022) – Powered by 11 different Mavericks recording a point, the No. 12 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a convincing 16-4 win over Georgian Court University in a HEADstrong Game on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-2) have won two games in a row and defeat the Lions (1-7) for the seventh straight time.
Leading Mercy was senior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) who had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Graduate student Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) netted a game-high four goals and senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had two goals and one assist. Freshman Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) scored a career-high two goals and senior Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip), sophomore Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and freshman Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) each had a goal and two assists. Senior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and junior Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) each added a goal. Freshman Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had an assist, a game-high-tying three caused turnovers and a game-high four ground balls. Senior Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had three ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers and junior Gianna Mott (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) had three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) recorded an assist and senior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made five saves in the first half with no goals allowed to earn the win. Sophomore Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made four saves in the second half and sophomore Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a team-high five draw controls.
Georgian Court was led by Sabrina Chandler who had a team-high two goals. Alexis Hahn made six saves to take the loss.
After nearly two scoreless minutes of action, Mercy scored three goals in just over a minute to take a 3-0 lead with 11:59 left in the first quarter. Grzelaczyk got the scoring started with her first of the day, off an assist from Rosenfeld, with 13:08 on the clock. Corace and Cummings followed with back-to-back goals to put the Mavericks up, 3-0, quickly. Moussa found the back of the net at the 9:44 mark to make it 4-0 and Bishop added a free position goal less than 30 seconds later to give Mercy a 5-0 lead. The Mavericks scored four more goals in the opening quarter to take a 9-0 lead after one quarter. Corace netted two more goals and Shimborske and Bishop also scored to give Mercy a commanding lead after one quarter.
The Mavericks continued to dominate in the second quarter, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of action to build a 12-0 lead. Grzelaczyk got the scoring started at the 13:13 mark and Bishop and Hansen added goals to give Mercy a 12-0 lead with 9:54 left in the half. Corace scored the final Mavericks goal of the half with 6:17 on the clock, following a Schreck assist, to give Mercy a 13-0 lead at halftime.
Georgian Court scored their first goal of the game with 12:20 left in the third quarter to make it 13-1 after a Chandler goal. The Lions added another goal with less than a minute left in the quarter to cut Mercy's lead to 13-2 after three quarters.
Keenan opened the scoring in the fourth quarter at the 12:41 mark to make it 14-2. Chandler scored her second goal just over a minute later to make it 14-3. Schreck and Moussa answered with back-to-back goals to give the Mavericks a 16-3 lead with 8:40 remaining. The Lions scored their final goal of the game with 6:16 left to make it 16-4 but it was not enough as Mercy came away with the win.
Mercy held a 25-16 edge in shots and a 23-11 edge in ground balls. Georgian Court held a 13-10 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 19th when they host No. 14 Bentley at 1 p.m.
