DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 2, 2022) – Powered by five Mavericks recording multiple RBI, the Mercy College baseball team earned a 12-8 win over Bloomfield College in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-6) snap a four-game losing streak, while the Bears (1-3) have dropped three of their first four games.
Senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. Freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs and graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Freshman Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) went 1-for-3 with three RBI and senior James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) went 2-for-4 with two runs and junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) went 1-for-2 with three runs. Senior Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) went 2-for-4 with a run and junior Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) pitched six innings with eight runs allowed to earn his second win of the year. Junior Anthony Burgio (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) pitched three shutout innings to earn the save.
Bloomfield was led by Luis Garcia who went 2-for-3 with a home run and game-high four RBI. Christopher Walker pitched five innings with 11 runs allowed to take the loss.
Mercy struck first with six runs in the bottom of the first to take a 6-0 lead. Caballero led off with a single and Giblin was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Wootten then singled home Caballero to make it 1-0. After a walk loaded the bases, Dieguez singled home Wootten and Giblin to give Mercy a 3-0 lead. Following a hit by pitch to load the bases, Hoti recorded a triple to right field, plating three runs to give the Mavericks a 6-0 lead.
The Bears made it 6-1 in the second inning on a Luis Ramirez sacrifice fly. Bloomfield added a run in the third on a Tyree Bradley home run to cut Mercy's lead to 6-2. A Javell Barnes two-run home run in the fourth inning cut Mercy's lead to just one, 6-5.
The Mavericks struck back with four runs in the fourth inning to make it 10-5. Saltzman singled and stole second before Caballero recorded an RBI single to bring Saltzman home. Giblin later walked and stole second to put runners on second and third. After a flyout, Mattutat clobbered a three-run home run to put the Mavericks up, 10-5, after four innings.
Mercy tacked on a run in the fifth inning on a Caballero sacrifice fly to make it 11-5.
Bloomfield scored their final three runs in the sixth on a three-run home run by Garcia to make it 11-8. Mercy plated a run in the sixth inning on a Wootten RBI single to left field, giving the Mavericks a 12-8 lead.
Burgio did not surrender a hit in the final three innings to close out the win for Mercy.
Mercy had 14 hits and one error and Bloomfield had nine hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Jefferson at 3 p.m.
