GREENSBURG, Pa. (Mar. 20, 2022) – Powered by a game-high four points from graduate student Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) and a game-high 14 saves from senior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), the No. 6 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 10-8 win over No. 19 Seton Hill University on Sunday afternoon at DSG Field.
The Mavericks (5-1) have won two games in a row and win at the Griffins (4-4) for the first time in program history.
Scorcia had a game-high three goals with an assist, two ground balls and one caused turnover. Senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) and sophomore Andrew Calabria (Sachem, N.Y./Sachem North) each had two goals and an assist. Kearnan recorded his 100th career point as a Maverick, becoming the 11th Maverick to record 100 points. Graduate student Matt Eccles (Syracuse, N.Y./University at Albany) had a goal and two assists and graduate student Sean Makar (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Binghamton University) and senior Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) each scored. Junior Justin Gerdvil (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and sophomore Damiano Ferrara (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) each had four ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) went 8-for-18 on faceoffs with four ground balls. Umano made a season-high 14 saves to earn the win. The senior recorded his 200th career save, becoming the fourth Maverick in program history to reach the mark.
Seton Hill was led by Layne Harich who had a team-high three points on two goals and one assist. Josh Miller made 13 saves to take the loss.
Mercy entered the game winless in four prior matchups at Seton Hill. The Mavericks got off to a great start as Eccles found the back of the net with 13:36 left in the first quarter, off an assist from Calabria, to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Andy Davis tied the game at 1-1 at the 10:12 mark. However, Scorcia scored back-to-back goals to put the Mavericks up 3-1 and Gibbons added a man-up goal less than 30 seconds later to give Mercy a 4-1 lead after one quarter.
Makar increased the lead to 5-1 with a goal at the 8:48 mark of the second quarter following an assist from Scorcia. Kearnan and Scorcia later netted consecutive goals to make it 7-1 with 4:27 left in the half. Jeremy Sforzo scored for Seton Hill to make it 7-2, but Calabria scored with six seconds left in the quartet to give Mercy an 8-2 lead at halftime.
Seton Hill scored the only two goals in the third quarter to cut Mercy's lead to 8-4 after three quarters.
The Griffins scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to cut the Mavericks lead to one, 8-7, with 7:31 left to play. Mercy won the ensuing faceoff and Calabria scored to put Mercy back up two, 9-7, with 6:32 remaining. Kearnan gave the Mavericks a 10-7 lead at the 4:53 mark after scooping up a ground ball after a Miller save and firing it past the goalie to give Mercy a three-goal lead. Thomas Hanulak scored less than a minute later to make it 10-8, but the Mavericks defense and Umano held Seton Hill scoreless for the final 4:17 to earn the win.
Seton Hill held a 43-40 edge in shots and went 12-for-21 on faceoffs. Mercy held a 24-22 edge in ground balls.
