Scouting the Mavericks
· The Mavericks are coming off a 5-3 win and 4-1 loss to Bridgeport on Saturday.
· Mercy was picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 18-11 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Mavericks set a school record with 14 ECC wins and had their first winning record overall since 1990.
· Freshman Jaden Caballero was named ECC Rookie of the Week on Monday and ECC Player of the Week on February 21st and is hitting .372 with a team-high 32 hits, 15 runs, 11 stolen bases and two home runs to go along with 14 RBI in 22 games.
· Senior Jonathan Diforio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on February 21st and was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday. He is 1-2 on the mound with a team-best 4.14 ERA in 37 innings pitched with 16 strikeouts. Freshman Scott Scheppy has pitched 33 innings and has 15 strikeouts with a 5.45 ERA.
· Graduate student Robert Wootten and senior Nikko Liguori were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on February 21st. Wootten has a team-high-tying 15 RBI on the year with a team-high-tying two triples. Liguori has five RBI and 11 runs.
· Junior Justin Glennerster has a home run and eight RBI on the year and the reigning ECC Rookie of the Year junior Nolan Giblin is hitting a team-high .377 with a team-high-tying 15 RBI. He also is second on the team with 11 runs and 29 hits. Senior James Mattutat is tied for fifth on the team with five RBI.
· Freshman Alfred Hoti was named ECC Rookie of the Week last week and has four RBI in 12 games.
· Junior Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week last week and was named Second Team All-ECC last season. He has pitched a team-high-tying 37 innings this season with a 4.86 ERA, team-high 39 strikeouts, a 2-3 record and one save. Junior Kevin Seckler is 2-1 on the bump in 24.2 innings with 16 strikeouts in six appearances. Graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn is 2-1 with one save and a 2.61 ERA in 10.1 innings with seven strikeouts.
· Mercy earned their first win over a ranked team since 2018 after defeating No. 14 Goldey-Beacom on February 20th.
· The Mavericks are hitting .263 as a team and have a 6.44 team ERA through 22 games.
Scouting the Dolphins
· Staten Island is coming off 17-7 and 6-4 losses at St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.
· The Dolphins were picked sixth in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 7-17 last season.
· Staten Island is led at the plate by one-time ECC Player of the Week sophomore Jake Myers who is batting a team-high .460 with four RBI and 16 runs scored. Junior Domenick Castiglione is hitting .455 with 10 RBI and a team-high 19 runs scored.
· Junior Shendi Ulaj has a team-high 16 RBI and two home runs with a .341 average. Sophomore Nick Cippoletti is second on the team with 12 RBI and has a team-high five stolen bases.
· Junior John Esposito leads the pitching staff with a 1.57 ERA in 23 innings pitched with 27 strikeouts. He is 2-1 with a team-high two saves. Freshman Brandon Laino has pitched 13.2 innings with a 5.93 ERA and 1-0 record. Freshman Ryan Kehoe is second on the team with 17.1 innings pitched and has a 1-1 record and 7.27 ERA.
