Game Preview: Baseball Plays at Adelphi on Tuesday

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off 7-2 and 5-3 losses to Southern Connecticut State on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by freshman Frankie Asaro who had a team-high two RBI on the day.

·        Mercy was picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 18-11 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Mavericks set a school record with 14 ECC wins and had their first winning record overall since 1990.

·        Caballero was named ECC Player of the Week on February 21st and is hitting .340 with a team-high 16 hits, eight runs and two home runs to go along with eight RBI in 12 games.

·        Senior Jonathan Diforio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on February 21st and is 0-2 on the mound with a team-best 5.19 ERA in 17.1 innings pitched with eight strikeouts. Freshman Scott Scheppy has pitched a team-high 19.0 innings and has eight strikeouts.

·        Graduate student Robert Wootten and senior Nikko Liguori were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on February 21st. Wootten has a team-high 10 RBI on the year and is hitting .263 with a team-high two triples. Liguori is third on the team with five RBI and is second on the team with seven runs.

·        Junior Justin Glennerster has a home run and three RBI on the year and the reigning ECC Rookie of the Year junior Nolan Giblin is hitting a team-high .341 with four RBI, six runs and 14 hits. Senior James Mattutat is batting .273 on the year and is tied for third on the team with five RBI.

·        Junior Anthony Burgio was named Second Team All-ECC last season and has pitched 15.2 innings this season with a team-high 13 strikeouts, a 0-2 record and one save. Junior Kevin Seckler is 2-1 on the bump in 15.2 innings with nine strikeouts in four appearances.

·        Mercy earned their first win over a ranked team since 2018 after defeating No. 14 Goldey-Beacom on February 20th.

·        The Mavericks are hitting .256 as a team and have an 8.03 team ERA through 12 games.

·        Mercy is looking for their second straight win over Adelphi and first win at Adelphi since 2011.

Scouting the Panthers

·        Adelphi is coming off an 8-3 loss to Molloy on Sunday.

·        The Panthers were picked first in the NE10 Southwest Division Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 19-15 in 2021. Adelphi advanced to the NE10 Championship series before falling to Southern N.H.

·        Adelphi is ranked seventh in this week's NCBWA East Region Poll.

·        Preseason NCBWA All-American Honorable Mention selection Matt Alifano returns for the Panthers and is hitting .357 with two home runs and six RBI. Preseason NCBWA All-Region First Team recipient Tim Feliz returns in the outfield and is hitting .412 with five RBI in four starts.

·        Kyle Olson is hitting a team-high .538 through four games and Michael Draskin has six RBI and a home run in 16 at bats.

·        Returning on the mound is NE10 Third Team All-Conference performer Nicolas Luc. Luc is 1-0 on the year with a 5.40 ERA in 10 innings of work with 14 strikeouts. Josh Rovner is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five innings with six strikeouts.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Saturday, March 12th when they host New Haven at 12 p.m.
