GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2022) – Despite an RBI from freshmen Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 9-2 decision to Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at Bonomo Memorial Field.
The Mavericks (3-10) have dropped four games in a row, while the Panthers (3-2) snap a two-game losing streak.
Hoti went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Caballero went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Nikko Liguori (Branford, Conn./Franklin Pierce University), junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) and graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC) all went 1-for-3. Senior Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) pitched two innings with six runs allowed to take the loss. Graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) pitched two scoreless innings of relief and sophomore Joshua Alvarado (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) pitched one scoreless inning of relief.
Adelphi was led by Matt Alifano who went 3-for-4 with a game-high five RBI. Andrew Williams pitched six innings with no runs allowed to earn the win.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Tim Feliz hit an RBI groundout to shortstop, scoring Alifano, who led off the inning with a double.
Adelphi added two more runs in the second inning on an Alifano two-run double to make it 3-0.
The Panthers scored three more runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead after five innings.
Mercy ended the shutout bid in the top of the eighth, scoring two runs to make it 9-2. Sophomore Jared Hernandez (Moca, Puerto Rico/Friends University) led off the inning with a walk and scored after a Hoti double to right field. After a pair of flyouts, Caballero doubled to center field, scoring Hoti to give the Mavericks their second run. A groundout to third ended the inning.
The Mavericks went down in order in the ninth inning, giving Adelphi the 9-2 win.
Mercy had five hits and one error and Adelphi had 10 hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 12th when they host New Haven at 12 p.m.
