DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2022) – Powered by a game-high four goals from graduate student Marty Shargel (Agoura Hills, Calif./Onondaga CC), the No. 5 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 16-3 Senior Day win over ECC foe D'Youville University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Sean Makar (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Binghamton University), Joseph Guglielmo (Coral Springs, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), Shane Gibbons (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Long Island University), Shargel, Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), Matt Eccles (Syracuse, N.Y./University at Albany), Sean Rigley (Pleasant Hill, Calif./Onondaga CC), Phil Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Adelphi University) and Robert LoRicco (Guilford, Conn./University at Albany) were recognized for their contributions to the men's lacrosse program.
The Mavericks (8-1, 3-0 ECC) have won five games in a row, while the Saints (0-7, 0-2 ECC) remain winless on the year.
Shargel had a season-high four goals with an assist and Scorcia had three goals and an assist. Senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) had three goals and three assists and senior Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had a goal and an assist. Juniors TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Mustapha Daffeh (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes), sophomores Kyle Gabrinowitz (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and Brody Caskenette (Owen Sound, Ontario/Owen Sound District Secondary School) and LoRicco also scored. Makar, Shane Gibbons, sophomores Damiano Ferrara (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) and Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) and junior Matt Gaughan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) each recorded an assist. Junior James Distefano (Bardonia, N.Y./Clarkstown South) had a team-high two caused turnovers and junior PJ Argiros (Levittown, N.Y./Nassau CC) went 6-for-11 on faceoffs with a team-high four ground balls. Senior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) allowed one goal in the first quarter to earn the win. Senior Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), freshman Brett Crecco (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and sophomores Giovanni Guido (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) and Tyler Vassell (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) combined for four saves in the last three quarters.
D'Youville was led by Nick Sholett who had a team-high two goals. Zak DeCarolis made nine saves to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless for nearly five minutes until Makar found Kearnan for the first goal of the game. Sholett tied the game at 1-1 just over a minute later. Shargel netted three goals and Scorcia netted his first of the game to put the Mavericks up 5-1 with 3:18 left in the opening quarter. Kearnan and Scorcia found the back of the net again to close out the quarter, giving Mercy a 7-1 lead after one quarter.
A Tristan Engelhardt goal made it 7-2 just over a minute into the second quarter. Scorcia and LoRicco followed with back-to-back goals to put the Mavericks up, 9-2, with 6:35 left in the half. Sholett recorded the final Saints goal at the 5:25 mark to make it 9-3. Gibbons scored the final goal of the half to give Mercy a 10-3 lead at halftime.
Mercy rattled off four goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 14-3 lead after three quarters. Heyder, Shargel, Kearnan and Caskenette all scored to give the Mavericks a double-digit lead.
Gabrinowitz and Daffeh both scored in the fourth quarter as Mercy cruised to a 16-3 Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 36-12 edge in shots, a 34-19 edge in ground balls and went 11-for-20 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 16th when they host UDC at 11 a.m.
