Game Preview: Baseball Takes on New Haven and Lincoln This Week

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2022) –The Mercy College baseball team hosts University of New Haven on Wednesday, April 13th at 3:30 p.m. before playing at Lincoln University this weekend.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        The Mavericks are coming off 11-3 and 5-3 losses to Molloy on Saturday.

·        Mercy was picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 18-11 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Mavericks set a school record with 14 ECC wins and had their first winning record overall since 1990.

·        Freshman Jaden Caballero was named ECC Rookie of the Week on March 28th and ECC Player of the Week on February 21st and is hitting .339 with a team-high 40 hits to go along with two home runs and 16 RBI. He also has a team-high 20 runs and 14 stolen bases in 30 games.

·        Senior Jonathan Diforio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on February 21st and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is 3-2 on the mound with a team-best 3.11 ERA in 55 innings pitched with 29 strikeouts. Freshman Scott Scheppy has pitched 42.1 innings and has 20 strikeouts with a 5.95 ERA.

·        Graduate student Robert Wootten and senior Nikko Liguori were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on February 21st. Wootten has 18 RBI on the year with a team-high three triples. Liguori has eight RBI, 13 runs and is batting .284 on the year.

·        Junior Justin Glennerster has a home run and 11 RBI on the year and the reigning ECC Rookie of the Year junior Nolan Giblin is hitting a team-high .385 with a team-high 21 RBI, 40 hits and four home runs. He also is second on the team with 18 runs and eight stolen bases. Senior James Mattutat is fifth on the team with nine RBI.

·        Freshman Alfred Hoti was named ECC Rookie of the Week on March 14th and has five RBI in 16 games.

·        Junior Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on March 21st and was named Second Team All-ECC last season. He has pitched 51 innings this season with a 4.94 ERA, a team-high 49 strikeouts, a 3-4 record and one save. Junior Kevin Seckler is 2-1 on the bump in 31.1 innings with 17 strikeouts in nine appearances. Graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn is 2-1 with two saves and a 3.14 ERA in 14.1 innings with seven strikeouts.

·        Mercy won at Molloy for the first time since 2017 on Friday.

·        The Mavericks are hitting .267 as a team and have a 5.74 team ERA through 30 games.

Scouting the Chargers

·        New Haven is coming off 5-3 and 12-2 losses to Le Moyne on Monday, extending their losing streak to three games.

·        The Chargers were picked third in the NE10 Southwest Division Coaches' Poll after going 9-10 last season. 

·        New Haven is ranked seventh in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll.

·        The Chargers have been led at the plate by senior Andrew Cain who is hitting a team-high .364 with 28 hits, 15 RBI and 16 runs scored. Freshman Cole Maucere is hitting .342 with a team-high 16 RBI to go along with 18 runs.

·        Junior Robert Taylor is hitting .361 with a team-high 22 runs with 14 RBI and junior Andrew Bianco has a team-high three home runs.

·        The pitching staff is led by freshman Thomas Eletto who has a team-best 1.90 with a 4-1 record in 42.2 innings with 41 strikeouts. Junior Drew Silverman has a 2.45 ERA and a team-high five saves.

Scouting the Lions

·        Lincoln is coming off a 5-2 win and 14-4 loss at Bridgeport on Saturday.

·        The Lions were picked seventh in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 5-19 last season.

·        Lincoln is led at the plate by CarVonte Williams who is batting .289 with 10 RBI, a home run, 11 runs and five doubles. Jefry Azcona is hitting .282 with 13 RBI, 15 runs scored and seven doubles.

·        Alex Jones has 10 RBI and 11 runs scored and Hilman Truss has 12 RBI and 11 runs scored.

·        The pitching staff is led by Gabriel Sanchez who is 3-5 on the mound with a 5.27 ERA in 41 innings with 39 strikeouts. Josiah Lara is 1-3 with a 7.92 ERA in 30.2 innings with 15 strikeouts.

Mercy resumes action on Friday, April 22nd when they play at STAC at 3:30 p.m.
