DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2022) – Despite home runs from freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) and junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to University of New Haven on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (12-18-1) have dropped three games in a row, while the Chargers (16-11) sweep the season series.
Caballero went 2-for-3 with his third home run of the season and three RBI. Giblin went 1-for-4 with his team-leading fifth home run of the season and senior Nikko Liguori (Branford, Conn./Franklin Pierce University) went 2-for-4 with a run. Senior Ivan Martinez Jr. (Bronx, N.Y./Towson University) went 1-for-3 with a run. Junior Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) made the start on the mound and went two innings with one run allowed to take a no-decision. Freshman Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) tossed two scoreless innings and freshman Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) and graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) both tossed a scoreless inning of relief. Sophomore Joshua Alvarado (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) pitched 2.1 innings with one run allowed to take the loss.
New Haven was led by Andrew Cain who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Gary Costello pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and Drew Silverman pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
Mercy scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Martinez Jr. led off the inning with a single and stole second. Liguori then singled to put runners on first and third before Caballero delivered a three-run home run to left field to make it 3-0. Giblin then followed with a solo home run to left field to give Mercy a 4-0 lead.
New Haven got a run back in the top of the second on an Andrew Cain home run to make it 4-1.
The score remained 4-1 until the top of the sixth when New Haven scored three runs to tie the game at 4-4. Noah Budzik drove in the first run of the inning on an RBI single and Cain brought in the second run on an RBI groundout to make it 4-3. Robert Taylor later scored the tying run on a wild pitch to make it 4-4.
New Haven took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth on a Josh Lester RBI double. The Mavericks got the tying run to third in both the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to score, giving the Chargers the win.
Mercy had six hits and one error and New Haven had nine hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 15th when they play at Lincoln at 3 p.m.
