Eight Mavericks Record an RBI as Baseball Sweeps Lincoln

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (Apr. 16, 2022) – Powered by eight different Mavericks recording an RBI on the day, the Mercy College baseball team earned 7-4 and 13-3 victories over ECC foe Lincoln University on Saturday afternoon at LU Baseball Complex.

The Mavericks (15-18-1, 8-4 ECC) sweep the season series with the Lions (5-28, 1-11 ECC)

Game 1: Mercy 7, Lincoln 4

Lincoln scored a run in the second inning and three runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Mercy trailed 4-0 heading into the seventh inning when they scored six runs to take a 6-4 lead. Graduate student Robert Wootten led off the inning with a single and freshman Alfred Hoti walked. After a strikeout, senior James Mattutat hit a three-run home run to make it 4-3. Senior Ivan Martinez Jr. later recorded an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4. Junior Nolan Giblin drew a bases-loaded walk to give Mercy a 5-4 lead. Wootten brought in the final run on a sacrifice fly to put the Mavericks up 6-4.

Mercy added a run in the ninth inning when Giblin walked and was brought home by a Wootten single to make it 7-4. The Mavericks did not allow a run in the bottom of the ninth to take the game one win.

Mattutat went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI and Wootten went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Martinez Jr. went 1-for-2 with an RBI and senior Nikko Liguori went 1-for-2. Freshman Jaden Caballero went 1-for-4 and freshman Nathan Rodriguez went 1-for-4. Junior Kevin Seckler pitched four innings to earn a no-decision. Freshman Scott Scheppy pitched the final five innings with one hit allowed and seven strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win.

Lincoln was led by Jefry Azcona who went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Leon McKnight allowed an earned run to take the loss.

Mercy had seven hits and no errors and Lincoln had nine hits and one error.

Game 2: Mercy 13, Lincoln 3

Lincoln took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Mercy battled back with eight runs in the third inning to take an 8-1 lead. Caballero recorded a two-run double and Giblin followed that up with a two-run single to make it 4-1. Mattutat doubled to score Giblin, making it 5-1 and Rodriguez hit a two-run double to center field to give Mercy a 7-1 lead. Junior Justin Glennerster brought in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 8-1.

Mercy made it 9-1 in the fourth inning when senior Ryan Saltzman singled and later scored on a Giblin RBI single.

A Glennerster RBI double in the fifth made it 10-1. Lincoln scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-3.

Mercy scored three more runs in the seventh to take a 13-3 lead. Rodriguez brought home the first run after reaching on an error and Glennerster brought in the second run on a sacrifice fly to make it 12-3. Saltzman brought in the final run of the game on another sacrifice fly to give Mercy a 13-3 lead.

Graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn pitched a scoreless seventh inning to give Mercy the win.

Giblin went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Glennerster went 1-for-1 with three RBI and Saltzman went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Caballero went 1-for-4 with two RBI and Wootten went 2-for-4 with two runs. Mattutat went 2-for-3 with an RBI and freshman Frankie Asaro went 1-for-3. Rodriguez went 4.2 innings with three runs allowed to earn his first collegiate win. Sophomore Joshua Alvarado and Jocelyn pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Lincoln was led by Azcona who had an RBI. Gabriel Sanchez pitched 2.1 innings to take the loss.

Mercy had 11 hits and no errors and Lincoln had four hits and three errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 22nd when they play at STAC at 3:30 p.m.
