POMONA, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2022) – Despite three Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 15-4 decision to ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday afternoon at Clover Stadium.
The Mavericks (15-19-1, 8-5 ECC) see their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Spartans (15-18, 8-5 ECC) move into a tie for third in the ECC standings with Mercy.
Junior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) went 2-for-4 with two runs and freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 1-for-4 with a run. Senior Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) went 1-for-3 and freshman Connor Ruland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had an RBI. Senior Jonathan Diforio (Harrison, N.Y./University of Delaware) allowed 10 earned runs in three innings to take the loss.
STAC was led by Matthew Johnston who went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Aaron Dona allowed one run in seven innings to earn the win.
After Mercy went down in order in the top of the first, STAC scored nine runs in the bottom of the first on seven hits and one Maverick error to take a 9-0 lead after one inning.
The Spartans added two more runs in the third and one in the fourth to take a 12-0 lead. Mercy broke the shutout in the top of the seventh with a run to make it 12-1. Giblin led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Glennerster RBI single.
STAC tacked on two mores in the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 15-1 lead. The Mavericks scored three runs in the ninth to make it 15-4. Caballero and Giblin recorded back-to-back singles and graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC) walked to load the bases. Ruland then brought in Caballero on an RBI groundout to third to make it 15-2. Mattutat plated the second run of the inning on an RBI single through the left side to make it 15-3. Wootten later scored on a wild pitch to make it 15-4. A pair of strikeouts ended the inning and game.
Mercy had six hits and five errors and STAC had 16 hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host STAC at 12 p.m.
