DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2022) – Powered by a game-high four goals from senior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and a game-high 13 saves from senior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's), the No. 13 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 13-10 Senior and First Responders Day win over Jefferson University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Kerri Cummings, Erin Chalich, Taylor Bishop, Briana Corace, Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk, Micayla Brady, Alexandra Bigilin, Juliana Keenan, Hunter Savino, Katie Jelliffe, Kayla Reese and Madeline Garvalosa were recognized.
The Mavericks (9-4) have won three games in a row, while the Rams (9-4) drop their sixth straight meeting to the Mavericks.
Keenan had a game-high four goals and senior Taylor Bishop had three goals and an assist. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk had two goals and an assist and freshman Leah Hansen had a goal and two assists. Graduate student Briana Corace, sophomore Kelly Rosenfeld and senior Kerri Cummings also scored. Sophomore Christina Lopreato had an assist and freshman Lindsey Shimborske and senior Alexandra Bigilin each had three caused turnovers. Garvalosa made 13 saves to earn the win.
Jefferson was led by Kanha Stockford who had a team-high three goals. Kelsey Kaplowitz made two saves in the second half to take the loss.
Keenan gave the Mavericks the early lead with her first of the day at the 12:32 mark. Jefferson rattled off three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead with 3:51 left in the quarter. Hansen followed with a free position goal to make it 3-2 before Ellie Lefton gave the Rams a 4-2 lead after one quarter.
Bishop got the Mavericks to within one at 4-3 with 11:50 left in the half. Stockford answered less than a minute later to make it 5-3. Grzelaczyk, Bishop, Rosenfeld and Keenan responded with four straight goals to put Mercy up 7-5 with 2:53 on the clock. A late Stockford goal made it 7-6 at halftime.
Keenan increased the Mavericks lead to 8-6 at the 13:32 mark of the third quarter. Grzelaczyk later made it 9-6 after her second goal of the day with 10:35 on the clock. Jefferson made it 9-7 before Cummings scored to once again give Mercy a three-goal lead, 10-7, with seven minutes left in the period. The Rams scored the final three goals of the quarter to head into the fourth quarter tied at 10-10.
Garvalosa made a key save on a free position attempt in the first minute of the fourth to keep the game tied. Corace would put the Mavericks ahead for good after an assist from Grzelaczyk, making it 11-10 with 13:43 remaining. Keenan and Bishop added goals to make it 13-10 and Garvalosa made four saves in the quarter to give Mercy the win.
Jefferson held a 27-22 edge in shots and a 20-6 edge in draw controls. Mercy held a 22-14 edge in ground balls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 23rd when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 2 p.m.
