Game Preview: Softball Hosts STAC and Queens on Tuesday and Thursday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2022) – The Mercy College softball team hosts St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday, April 19th at 2:30 p.m. and hosts Queens College on Thursday, April 21st at 2:30 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off an 18-5 loss and 3-1 win over Molloy on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by junior Samantha Franck who went 5-for-5 with four RBI.

·        Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 17-14 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2018. The Mavericks went 15-9 in ECC play a year ago.

·        Junior Samantha Franck was named ECC Player of the Week and junior Alexi Benson was tabbed pitcher of the Week on Monday.

·        Last week, junior Sydney Johnston was named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On March 7th, sophomore Shannon Sisco, senior Alexis Crawford and freshman Maddie Lula were named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        Sisco was named ECC Player of the Week, Benson was tabbed Pitcher of the Week, freshman Victoria Seppala was named Rookie of the Week and senior Ariana Ricci was named to the Honor Roll on February 21st.

·        Sisco is hitting a team-high .384 with a team-high 24 runs with 38 hits to go along with 10 RBI. Lula has 22 hits, 10 runs, a team-high four home runs with nine RBI and Crawford is hitting .331 with a team-high 42 hits and 17 stolen bases. She also has 23 runs, eight RBI and four doubles. The senior recorded her 100th career hit against D'Youville on Friday.

·        Franck has 34 hits with a team-high 22 RBI, eight doubles and two home runs and Ricci has 12 RBI with 11 runs scored. Johnston is second on the team with 14 RBI and is hitting .264.

·        Benson is 7-11 in the circle with a 3.05 ERA in 112.1 innings with 101 strikeouts. Senior Sabrina Gonzalez has pitched 61.0 innings with 29 strikeouts and is 1-10 with a 6.66 ERA in 11 starts. Junior Angelina Oquendo is 0-3 in the circle with a 4.80 ERA in 35.0 innings with 17 strikeouts.  

·        Crawford, graduate student Danielle Burgos and junior Sydney Johnston were named First Team All-ECC last season.

·        The Mavericks are looking to sweep STAC at home for the first time since 2018.

·        Mercy looks to sweep Queens at home for the fourth straight time.

Scouting the Spartans

·        St. Thomas Aquinas is coming off a 4-1 win and 8-7 loss to D'Youville on Saturday.

·        The Spartans were picked third in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 24-13 last year, making their first-ever appearance in the final of the ECC Championship.

·        Freshman Abbie Landrum leads the Spartans at the plate with a .407 average. She has 35 hits, 13 runs and 18 RBI. The freshman is also 9-10 in the circle with a 2.93 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 110 innings.

·        Senior Carissa Della Vecchia is hitting .346 with 16 RBI and a team-high 24 runs scored. Junior Emilie Olivier has a team-high 26 RBI and three home runs and senior Amanda Castro has 18 RBI and two home runs.

·        Della Vecchia is 10-5 in the circle with a 3.18 ERA in 108 innings with 157 strikeouts.

Scouting the Knights

·        Queens is coming off a 6-1 loss and 7-1 win over Bridgeport on Saturday. The Knights will host Molloy on Tuesday before playing at Mercy on Thursday.

·        The Knights were picked sixth in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 4-20 in 2021.

·        Queens is led at the plate by freshman Amanda Baez who is hitting a team-high .302 with four RBI and a team-high 13 stolen bases. Junior Cyarra Alvarado is hitting .243 with 10 RBI, a team-high three home runs and 12 runs.

·        Senior Ann Grimshaw has a team-high 12 RBI and is hitting .300 and senior Danielle D'Angelo is hitting .234 with eight RBI and 10 runs.

·        The pitching staff is led by senior Emma Wimmer who is 1-11 in the circle with a 4.09 ERA in 73.2 innings with 46 strikeouts. Sophomore Arianna Fracchioni is 2-5 with a 3.64 ERA in 40.1 innings with 14 strikeouts.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Sunday, April 24th when they play at D'Youville at 12 p.m.
