Scouting the Mavericks
· Mercy is coming off a 17-8 win over Molloy last Saturday in their ECC opener. The Mavericks were led by senior Brady Kearnan who had a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists. Junior TJ Heyder added a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists.
· On Monday, Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and Heyder and junior Justin Gerdvil were tabbed to the Honor Roll. Kearnan was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week on Tuesday.
· Last week, senior Tommy Umano was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time.
· On March 14th, senior Jack Kipnes was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and graduate student Dominic Scorcia was named to the Honor Roll. Kipnes was also tabbed to the USILA Division II Team of the Week.
· On March 7th, sophomore Tyler Pjatak and junior PJ Argiros were named to the ECC Honor Roll.
· Pjatak was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Scorcia and senior Brady Kearnan were tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 28th. Kearnan was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week after having a team-high 11 points.
· Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named Co-Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Gerdvil was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 9-1 during the 2021 season, winning their second straight ECC Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.
· Mercy is currently ranked No. 5 in the USILA Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.
· Mercy is 38-5 in their last 43 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season. The Mavericks are 23-3 at home during that stretch.
· Mercy has had nine straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last six seasons the tournament was held.
· The Mavericks are 5-0 all-time against the Spartans.
· Head Coach Jordan Levine recorded his 100th career win in the victory over Molloy on Saturday. He currently holds a 100-38 record in 10 seasons as head coach.
· Scorcia has been named ECC Offensive Player of the Week once and has a team-high 31 points on a team-high 22 goals with nine assists. The graduate student became the third Maverick in program history to record 200 career points against Le Moyne on March 5th. Kearnan is second on the team with 30 points on 15 goals and a team-high 15 assists. He recorded his 100th career point as a Maverick in the win over Seton Hill.
· Graduate student Matt Eccles is third on the team with 16 points on nine goals and seven assists. Senior Jack Gibbons has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once this season and has 10 goals and six assists. Sophomore Andrew Calabria is fifth on the team with 13 points on nine goals and four assists. Heyder is also fifth on the team with 13 points by way of seven goals and six assists.
· Sophomore Brody Caskenette and junior Robert Guglielmo both have seven points on the year. Caskenette has five goals and two assists and Guglielmo has two goals and five assists.
· The defense is led by Pjatak who has a team-high 10 caused turnovers with 19 ground balls. Gerdvil is tied for second on the team with nine caused turnovers and is second with 20 ground balls. Senior Sean Rigley was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 and has seven caused turnovers and nine ground balls. Kipnes was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year prior to the 2020 season and is tied for second on the team with nine caused turnovers.
· Argiros has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and leads the team with 42 ground balls and is 72-for-109 (.661) on faceoffs this season. Sophomore Jason Kuehner is 26-for-42 (.619) on faceoffs with 13 ground balls.
· Senior Tommy Umano is a two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and is 6-1 in goal with 66 saves, a .589 save percentage and 7.63 goals-against average in 361:56 minutes of action. The senior recorded his 200th career save in the win over Seton Hill on March 20th.
· Kearnan, Rigley, Gerdvil, Gibbons, Kipnes and Scorcia all earned Preseason All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse prior to this season.
Scouting the Spartans
· St. Thomas Aquinas is coming off an 11-5 loss to Molloy on Saturday, extending their losing streak to five games.
· The Spartans earned their lone win of the season at Alderson Broaddus on March 11th by a score of 10-8. STAC has dropped four games by three goals or less.
· St. Thomas Aquinas was picked fifth in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 0-6 last season. The Spartans earned their last ECC win on March 23, 2019 at UDC.
· The Spartans are led by sophomore Braiden Struss who has a team-high 24 points on a team-high 14 goals and 10 assists. Freshman Jack Margetson is second on the team with 15 points by way of 12 goals and three assists.
· Sophomore Jason Beddows has 14 points on eight goals and six assists and junior Jonathan Farley has eight goals and three assists.
· Sophomore James Staeckeler has a team-high 38 ground balls with a team-high-tying six caused turnovers. Junior Joseph Longobardo is 67-for-173 on faceoffs and senior Giorgio D'Angelo is 1-6 in goal with 74 saves, a .536 save percentage and 11.91 goals-against average.
