Game Preview: Baseball Takes on STAC This Weekend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 20, 2022) –The Mercy College baseball team plays at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday, April 22nd at 3:30 p.m. before hosting the Spartans on Saturday, April 23rd for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        The Mavericks are coming off 7-4 and 13-3 wins over Lincoln on Saturday. Eight different Mavericks recorded an RBI in the sweep.

·        Mercy was picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 18-11 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Mavericks set a school record with 14 ECC wins and had their first winning record overall since 1990.

·        Freshman Jaden Caballero was named ECC Rookie of the Week on March 28th and ECC Player of the Week on February 21st and is hitting .346 with a team-high 46 hits to go along with three home runs and 22 RBI. He also has a team-high-tying 23 runs and a team-high 16 stolen bases in 34 games.

·        Senior Jonathan Diforio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on February 21st and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is 4-2 on the mound with a team-best 3.63 ERA in 62 innings pitched with 42 strikeouts. Freshman Scott Scheppy has pitched 49.1 innings and has 27 strikeouts with a 5.11 ERA. He picked up his first collegiate win in the game one win over Lincoln on Saturday.  

·        Graduate student Robert Wootten was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday and Wootten and senior Nikko Liguori were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on February 21st. Wootten has 21 RBI and 20 runs scored on the year with a team-high three triples. Liguori has 10 RBI, 15 runs and is batting .295 on the year.

·        Junior Justin Glennerster has a home run and 15 RBI on the year and the reigning ECC Rookie of the Year junior Nolan Giblin is hitting a team-high .378 with a team-high 27 RBI, 23 runs and five home runs. He also is second on the team with 45 hits runs and eight stolen bases. Senior James Mattutat is fifth on the team with 13 RBI.

·        Freshman Alfred Hoti was named ECC Rookie of the Week on March 14th and has seven RBI in 19 games.

·        Junior Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on March 21st and was named Second Team All-ECC last season. He has pitched 51 innings this season with a 4.94 ERA, a team-high 49 strikeouts, a 3-4 record and one save. Junior Kevin Seckler is 2-1 on the bump in 37.1 innings with 22 strikeouts in 11 appearances. Graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn is 2-1 with two saves and a 2.76 ERA in 16.1 innings with 11 strikeouts.

·        Mercy is looking to win the season series with STAC for the first time since 2019.

·        The Mavericks are hitting .272 as a team and have a 5.62 team ERA through 34 games.

Scouting the Spartans

·        STAC is coming off a 17-9 win and 10-7 loss to Queens on Saturday.

·        The Spartans were picked second in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after winning the ECC Regular Season Championship in 2021 and advancing to the NCAA Championship for the seventh time in eight seasons.

·        STAC is led at the plate by senior Matthew Johnson who is hitting a team-high .337 on the year with 22 RBI, 35 hits, 15 runs and seven doubles. Junior Gregory DiGiaro is hitting .333 with a team-high five home runs, a team-high-tying 27 RBI and 21 runs.

·        Senior Andrew Jemison is also hitting .333 with a team-high-tying 27 RBI and a team-high 10 stolen bases. He also has 24 runs scored and nine doubles. Senior Danny Di Marzo is hitting .298 with 21 RBI and a team-high 14 doubles and 29 runs scored.

·        The pitching staff is led by senior Yanni Orfanidis who has appeared in 23 games and is 3-0 with a 3.09 ERA in 32 innings with 35 strikeouts. Senior John Archer is 3-4 on the mound with a 3.56 ERA in 48 innings with 41 strikeouts.

·        Senior Aaron Dona is 1-3 on the year with a 3.88 ERA in 46.1 innings with 57 strikeouts and junior Justin Baeyens has a team-high five saves.

·        STAC is hitting .290 as a team and has a 6.47 team ERA through 32 games.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Wednesday, April 27th when they host Pace at 3 p.m.
