ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Apr. 23, 2022) – Powered by graduate student Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) setting a school record for career goals, the No. 5 Mercy College men's lacrosse exploded for a school-record 27 goals in a 27-15 win over ECC foe RV Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at Redhawks Field.
The Mavericks (11-1, 5-0 ECC) have won eight games in a row and secure a spot in the ECC Tournament for the seventh straight season. The Redhawks (10-3, 4-1 ECC) suffer their first ECC loss of the season. The 27 goals scored surpasses the previous school record of 22 set twice.
Scorcia had four goals and an assist and now has 141 career goals, surpassing the previous school record of 140 set by Jesse Wood in 2015. Junior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had a career-high seven points on a career-high six goals with one assist and sophomore Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) had a career-high five goals. Senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) had six points on two goals and four assists and senior Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and graduate student Matt Eccles (Syracuse, N.Y./University at Albany) both had two goals and two assists. Freshman Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had a goal and an assist and graduate student Sean Makar (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Binghamton University) had two goals. Sophomores Justin DeMonte (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) and junior Matt Gaughan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) also scored. Junior Justin Gerdvil (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had an assist, five ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore Cristian Castles (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also had an assist and Kuehner went 16-for-26 on faceoffs with six ground balls. Senior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made 11 saves in 54:26 minutes of action to earn the win.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Hunter Lemieux who had a team-high five goals with one assist. Aidan Sheehan made 13 saves to take the loss.
Mercy wasted little time in getting the scoring started as Heyder found the back of the net just under a minute into the game to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Jordon Deats responded with a goal at the 13:21 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Calabria scored his first goal of the day with 8:35 on the clock to give Mercy a 2-1 lead. Heyder, Scorcia, Kearnan and Makar followed with four straight goals to put the Maverick up 6-1 with 2:27 remaining in the first quarter. Heyder tacked on his third goal of the quarter to make it 7-1 with 50 seconds left. Lemieux scored the final goal of the quarter to cut Mercy's lead to 7-2 after one quarter of play.
The Redhawks scored the first two goals of the second quarter to make it 7-4 with 12:56 remaining in the half. Calabria ended the run with his second of the day to put Mercy up 8-4. Dan Doviak made it 8-5 at the 10:52 mark. Heyder, Calabria and Gibbons ensued with three straight goals to give the Mavericks an 11-5 lead with 5:48 left in the half. Roberts Wesleyan scored the next two goals to make it 11-7 with two minutes on the clock. Eccles found the back of the net for the first time with just over a minute to play to make it 12-7. Doviak scored the final goal of the quarter, cutting Mercy's lead to 12-8 at halftime.
Gibbons and Lemieux traded goals to open the third quarter making it 13-9 in favor of Mercy with 10:42 left in the quarter. Back-to-back goals from Heyder increased the Mavericks lead to 15-9 with 8:40 remaining in the third quarter. Nate Maloney later made it 15-10, but Eccles, Kearnan and Scorcia rattled off three straight goals to put the Mavericks up eight, 18-10, with two minutes on the clock. Reid Jackowski scored for the Redhawks to make it 18-11. However, Calabria and Scorcia scored goals in the final minute of play in the quarter to give Mercy a commanding 20-11 lead after three quarters.
Kuehner opened the fourth quarter with a goal after winning the opening faceoff and Scorcia scored 17 seconds later to make it 22-11. After a Lemieux goal made it 22-12, Calabria, Makar, Gaughan and DeMonte scored the next four goals to give the Mavericks a 26-12 lead with six minutes remaining. Lemieux scored to make it 26-13 before Smith scored the final Mercy goal with 3:49 on the clock to make it 27-13. The Redhawks scored the final two goals of the game, but it was not enough and Mercy came away with the win.
Mercy held a 63-34 edge in shots, a 38-30 edge in ground balls and went 24-for-45 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 30th when they play at Frostburg State at 1 p.m.
