Scouting the Mavericks
· The Mavericks are coming off 4-2 and 3-1 wins over STAC on Saturday. Mercy was led by junior Kevin Seckler and freshman Scott Scheppy who both earned the win on the mound.
· Mercy was picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 18-11 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Mavericks set a school record with 14 ECC wins and had their first winning record overall since 1990.
· Freshman Jaden Caballero was named ECC Rookie of the Week on March 28th and ECC Player of the Week on February 21st and is hitting .347 with 50 hits to go along with three home runs and 23 RBI. He also has 24 runs and a team-high 17 stolen bases in 37 games.
· Senior Jonathan Diforio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on February 21st and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is 4-3 on the mound with a 4.85 ERA in 65 innings pitched with 45 strikeouts. Freshman Scott Scheppy has pitched 56.1 innings and has 30 strikeouts with a team-best 4.63 ERA. He picked up his first collegiate win in the game one win over Lincoln on April 16th.
· Graduate student Robert Wootten was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week and Wootten and senior Nikko Liguori were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on February 21st. Wootten has 22 RBI and 22 runs scored on the year with a team-high three triples. Liguori has 10 RBI, 15 runs and is batting .295 on the year.
· Junior Justin Glennerster has a home run and 16 RBI on the year and the reigning ECC Rookie of the Year junior Nolan Giblin is hitting a team-high .395 with a team-high 29 RBI, 27 runs, 51 hits and five home runs. He also is third on the team with nine stolen bases. Senior James Mattutat is fifth on the team with 16 RBI and has a team-high-tying five home runs.
· Freshman Alfred Hoti was named ECC Rookie of the Week on March 14th and has seven RBI in 21 games.
· Junior Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on March 21st and was named Second Team All-ECC last season. He has pitched 51 innings this season with a 4.94 ERA, a team-high 49 strikeouts, a 3-4 record and one save. Junior Kevin Seckler is 3-1 on the bump in 45.2 innings with 26 strikeouts in 12 appearances. Graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn is 2-1 with three saves and a 2.65 ERA in 17.0 innings with 11 strikeouts.
· Mercy looks to sweep the season series with the Setters.
· The Mavericks are hitting .270 as a team and have a 5.62 team ERA through 37 games.
Scouting the Setters
· Pace is coming off 14-5 and 3-2 losses to Southern Connecticut State on Sunday. The Setters were picked fourth in the NE10 Southwest Division Coaches' Poll after going 14-16 last season.
· Pace is receiving votes in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll.
· The Setters have been led at the plate by freshman Nicholas Montagna who is batting a team-high .393 with 27 RBI and seven doubles. Senior Luke Jacobi is hiting .374 with a team-high 33 RBI, 20 stolen bases and 32 runs.
· Senior Mitch McCabe is hitting .359 with a team-high nine home runs to go along with 25 RBI and a team-high-tying 32 runs. Senior Matt Almonte has 26 RBI and seven home runs.
· The pitching staff is led by junior Patrick Gleason who is 4-3 on the bump with a 1.88 ERA in seven starts. He also has a team-high 42 strikeouts in 48 innings. Junior Christian Aich is 3-3 with a 5.14 ERA in a team-high 49 innings with 35 strikeouts. Freshman Grant Biederman is 2-0 on the mound with two saves and a 2.55 ERA in 24.2 innings.
