Game Preview: No. 4 Men's Lacrosse Plays at RV Frostburg State on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 28, 2022) – The No. 4 Mercy College men's lacrosse team plays at RV Frostburg State University on Saturday, April 30th at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off a 27-15 win over Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday. The Mavericks set a school record for goals in a game and graduate student Dominic Scorcia set a school record for career goals. Junior TJ Heyder had a game-high seven points on six goals and one assist.

·        On Wednesday, Heyder and senior Jack Kipnes were tabbed to the USILA D2 Team of the Week.

·        On Monday, Heyder was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and Kipnes was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week.

·        Last week, Scorcia was named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On April 11th, senior Jake Fitzgerald was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and senior Brady Kearnan, graduate student Marty Shargel and junior Mustapha Daffeh were tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        On March 28th, Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and Heyder and Justin Gerdvil were tabbed to the Honor Roll. Kearnan was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week on Tuesday.

·        On March 21st, senior Tommy Umano was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time.

·        On March 14th, Kipnes was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Scorcia was named to the Honor Roll. Kipnes was also tabbed to the USILA Division II Team of the Week.

·        On March 7th, sophomore Tyler Pjatak and junior PJ Argiros were named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        Pjatak was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Scorcia and Kearnan were tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 28th. Kearnan was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week after having a team-high 11 points.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named Co-Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Gerdvil was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 9-1 during the 2021 season, winning their second straight ECC Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 4 in the USILA Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        Saturday's meeting is the first between the two schools.

·        Mercy is 43-5 in their last 48 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·        Mercy has had nine straight winning seasons and have now qualified for the ECC Championship in seven straight seasons.

·        The Mavericks are ranked second in the second NCAA Regional Rankings released on Wednesday. The top six teams in the North Region qualify for the NCAA Tournament at the end of the season.

·        Head Coach Jordan Levine recorded his 100th career win in the victory over Molloy on March 26th. He currently holds a 105-38 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Scorcia has been named ECC Offensive Player of the Week once and has a team-high 50 points on a team-high 35 goals with 15 assists. The graduate student became the third Maverick in program history to record 200 career points against Le Moyne on March 5th. He also now has a school-record 141 career goals. Kearnan is second on the team with 49 points on 25 goals and a team-high 24 assists. He recorded his 100th career point as a Maverick in the win over Seton Hill.

·        Graduate student Matt Eccles is fifth on the team with 24 points on 13 goals and 11 assists. Senior Jack Gibbons has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once this season and has 19 goals and 11 assists. Sophomore Andrew Calabria is sixth on the team with 22 points on 17 goals and five assists. Heyder is fourth on the team with 29 points by way of 19 goals and 10 assists.

·        Sophomore Brody Caskenette has 12 points on seven goals and five assists and junior Robert Guglielmo has four goals and seven assists.

·        The defense is led by Pjatak who has a team-high 14 caused turnovers with 30 ground balls. Gerdvil is second on the team with 13 caused turnovers and 31 ground balls. Senior Sean Rigley was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 and has eight caused turnovers and 13 ground balls. Kipnes was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year prior to the 2020 season and is second on the team with 13 caused turnovers. Fitzgerald also is second on the team with 13 caused turnovers.

·        Argiros has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and leads the team with 58 ground balls and is 102-162 (.630) on faceoffs this season. Sophomore Jason Kuehner is 57-90 (.633) on faceoffs with 25 ground balls.  

·        Senior Tommy Umano is a two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and is 11-1 in goal with 92 saves, a .579 save percentage and 7.71 goals-against average in 521:22 minutes of action. The senior recorded his 200th career save in the win over Seton Hill on March 20th.

·        Kearnan, Rigley, Gerdvil, Gibbons, Kipnes and Scorcia all earned Preseason All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse prior to this season.

Scouting the Bobcats

·        Frostburg is coming off a 20-3 win over D'Youville on Wednesday.

·        The Bobcats were picked second in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 6-2 last season.

·        Frostburg is receiving votes in the USILA Top 20 Poll.

·        The Bobcats are led by Jake Bowman who has a team-high 53 points on 29 goals and 24 assists with 30 ground balls. One-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week Bubba Love has 52 points on 24 goals and a team-high 28 assists and Gavin Schattall has a team-high 30 goals with six assists.

·        One-time ECC Rookie of the Week Alex Walstrum has a team-high 55 ground balls and is 92-143 (.643) on faceoffs. Cade Price is 100-209 (.478) on faceoffs and has 49 ground balls. Seamus Kearney has a team-high 33 caused turnovers with 42 ground balls and six goals.

·        Kevin Reuther is 10-6 in goal with 150 saves, a .514 save percentage and 10.80 goals-against average.

Mercy resumes action on Saturday, April 30th when they play at Frostburg State at 1 p.m.
