DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 29, 2022) – Powered by a game-high four RBI from junior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 14-9 win over ECC foe D'Youville University on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (18-20-1, 11-5 ECC) have won six of their last eight games, while the Saints (13-18, 6-9 ECC) remain winless against Mercy.
Glennerster went 2-for-5 with four RBI and junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) went 1-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs. Graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) went 1-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Freshman Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 2-for-3 with three runs. Freshman Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) went 1-for-2 with two runs and senior Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and freshman Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) both went 1-for-4 with a run. Senior Jonathan Diforio (Harrison, N.Y./University of Delaware) allowed four earned runs in seven innings to earn the win. Graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
D'Youville was led by Craig Oliver who went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Zach Penner allowed two earned runs in two innings to take the loss.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an unearned run. The score remained 1-0 until the third inning when Mercy scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Hoti reached on an error by the pitcher and scored on a Rodriguez groundout to second to tie the game at 1-1. Saltzman then singled and Caballero walked to put runners on first and second before Giblin smacked his sixth home run of the season over the left field fence to give the Mavericks a 4-1 lead.
D'Youville plated a run in the fourth inning to make it 4-2. The Mavericks answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-2. Wootten doubled and Glennerster followed with a single that scored Wootten.
The Saints scored three runs in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. The Mavericks quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-5 lead. Caballero reached on a fielder's choice and Giblin walked before Wootten doubled down the right field line to score both Caballero and Giblin, giving Mercy a 7-5 lead.
Mercy added on two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-5 lead. Rodriguez singled and Asaro reached on a fielder's choice. They both would score on an error by the pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt.
The Mavericks tacked on five more runs in the eighth inning to take a 14-5 lead. Mattutat drove in the first two runs on an RBI single through the left side to make it 11-5. Glennerster later hit a three-run double down the left field line to give Mercy a 14-5 lead after eight innings.
D'Youville scored four runs in the top of the ninth to make it 14-9 but sophomore Joshua Alvarado (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) recorded the final out on a strikeout to give Mercy the win.
Mercy had 15 hits and three errors and D'Youville had 15 hits and two errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host D'Youville at 12 p.m.
