DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 30, 2022) – Powered by a team-high five RBI on the day from junior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and strong pitching performances from junior Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and freshman Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), the Mercy College baseball team earned 9-1 and 3-1 Senior Day victories over ECC foe D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK), James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman), Ivan Martinez Jr. (Bronx, N.Y./Towson University), Nikko Liguori (Branford, Conn./Franklin Pierce University), Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC), Jonathan Diforio (Harrison, N.Y./University of Delaware), Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) and James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) were recognized.
The Mavericks (20-20-1, 13-5 ECC) sweep the season series with the Saints (13-20, 6-11 ECC) and secure their second straight berth into the ECC Championship.
Game 1: Mercy 9, D'Youville 1
D'Youville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Jeremy Glinski RBI single. The score remained 1-0 until the third inning when Mercy scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Saltzman reached on an error and later scored on a freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) RBI single to left field to make it 1-1. Glennerster later gave the Mavericks the lead with a two-run single to left field to make it 3-1. Freshman Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) plated the final run of the inning on a single to left center to give Mercy a 4-1 lead.
The four runs would be more than enough for Seckler who did not allow a run after the first inning. Mercy tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Wootten led off the inning with a walk and scored on a Glennerster RBI single to left field to make it 5-1. Rodriguez brought home the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center, giving Mercy a 6-1 lead.
The Mavericks scored two more runs in the sixth to take an 8-1 lead. Mattutat brought home the first run on a groundout to the pitcher and Glennerster singled home Wootten, who singled earlier in the inning, to make it 8-1.
Glennerster recorded his fifth RBI of the game in the eighth inning on a single to center field to make it 9-1.
Seckler retired the Saints in order in the ninth to give Mercy the 9-1 win.
Glennerster went 4-for-5 with a career-high five RBI and Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Caballero went 3-for-4 with an RBI and junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) went 1-for-3 with his 100th career hit. Wootten went 1-for-3 with three runs and Mattutat went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Seckler pitched a complete game with just three hits allowed and three strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the season.
D'Youville was led by Glinski who went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Rob Stephens pitched three innings with four runs allowed to take the loss.
Mercy had 12 hits and no errors and D'Youville had three hits and three errors.
Game 2: Mercy 3, D'Youville 1
Glinski gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an inside-the-park home run. Mercy tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Wootten singled to lead off the inning and would score on a freshman Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) RBI single to make it 1-1.
The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when Mercy scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead. Giblin singled and Glennerster later walked to put runners on first and second. Freshman Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) then delivered a two-run double down the left field line to give the Mavericks the lead for good.
Scheppy retired the Saints in order in the seventh to give Mercy the sweep.
Hoti went 1-for-2 with two RBI and Asaro went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Giblin went 1-for-3 and Wootten went 1-for-2. Junior Ryan Gonzalez (Howell, N.J./Neumann University) went 1-for-3 and Scheppy pitched 6.2 innings with one run allowed to earn his third win. DeRosa made his final start on the mound for the Mavericks and retired the only batter he faced on two pitches.
D'Youville was led by Glinski who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Harrison Lough went 5.1 innings with three runs allowed to take the loss.
Mercy had five hits and no errors and D'Youville had three hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, May 4th when they play at Dominican at 5 p.m.
