Giblin Homers and Liguori Records Six Hits as Baseball Hosts No. 19 Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2022) – Despite a home run from junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) in game one and six hits on the day from senior Nikko Liguori (Branford, Conn./Franklin Pierce University), the Mercy College baseball team dropped 11-3 and 5-3 decisions to ECC foe No. 19 Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (12-17-1, 5-4 ECC) fail to build off their win yesterday, while the Lions (21-9, 7-2 ECC) win the season series.

Game 1: Molloy 11, Mercy 3

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when Molloy took a 2-0 lead on a David Franchi RBI single and Patrick Hoffman sacrifice fly.

It stayed 2-0 until the sixth inning when Molloy scored three runs to take a 5-0 lead. Hoffman recorded a two-run single and Gavin McAlonie hit an RBI double.

The Lions tacked on a run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.

Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 6-2. Junior Ryan Gonzalez (Howell, N.J./Neumann University) reached on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) walked and freshman Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) followed with a single to load the bases. Senior Ivan Martinez Jr. (Bronx, N.Y./Towson University) then recorded a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 6-1. Liguori then doubled to score Mattutat to make it 6-2.

Molloy plated five runs in the ninth inning on two hits to take an 11-2 lead. Giblin homered to left field in the bottom of the ninth, but a flyout and lineout ended the game.

Giblin went 2-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season and Liguori went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Mattutat went 1-for-2 and Rodriguez went 1-for-3. Junior Anthony Burgio (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) pitched six innings with five runs allowed to take the loss.

Molloy was led by Hoffman who went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Mike Andreoli pitched a complete game with one earned run allowed to earn the win.

Mercy had six hits and two errors and Molloy had 13 hits and one error.

Game 2: Molloy 5, Mercy 3

Molloy took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on a Chris Einemann two-run triple and a Robby Keane sacrifice fly. A Matt Overton sacrifice fly in the third inning made it 4-0.

The Mavericks got a run back in the fourth inning to make it 4-1. Giblin tripled and later scored on a junior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) groundout to second.

The Lions took a 5-1 lead in the fifth on a Thomas Brady sacrifice fly. Mercy inched closer in the sixth inning with a run to make it 5-2. Freshman Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) delivered an RBI triple to right center that scored senior Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK).

Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-3. Martinez Jr. and Liguori both singled and freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Giblin then hit into a double play, which allowed Martinez Jr. to score, making it 5-3. A groundout to second would end the game with the tying run at the plate.

Liguori went 4-for-4 and Hoti went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Giblin and Martinez Jr. went 1-for-4 and Caballero and Rodriguez went 1-for-3. Mattutat went 1-for-2 and freshman Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) pitched five innings with five runs allowed to take the loss. Junior Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Molloy was led by Einemann who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Billy Wildeman pitched six innings to earn the win and Connor Huckemeyer pitched one inning to earn the save.

Mercy had 10 hits and no errors and Molloy had eight hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 13th when they host New Haven at 3:30 p.m.
