Game Preview: No. 1 Men's Lacrosse Hosts Defending National Champion No. 3 Le Moyne in NCAA Tournament National Semifinal on Sunday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 18, 2022) – The No. 1 seeded Mercy College men's lacrosse team hosts No. 3 seeded Le Moyne College in an NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Championship Semifinal matchup on Sunday, May 22nd at 1 p.m. at SUNY Purchase.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off an 11-10 win over No. 5 seed Seton Hill in the Quarterfinals on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by graduate student Dominic Scorcia and senior Brady Kearnan who combined for nine points. Senior Tommy Umano also added 13 saves.

·        Kearnan was tabbed First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine and senior Jack Gibbons and junior Justin Gerdvil were named Second Team All-American.

·        Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Year, Gerdvil was named Defensive Player of the Year and Umano was named Goalkeeper of the Year. Kearnan, Gerdvil, Umano, Scorcia, seniors Jack Kipnes, Gibbons and Jake Fitzgerald and sophomore Andrew Calabria were named First Team All-ECC. Graduate student Matt Eccles, junior TJ Heyder and sophomore Tyler Pjatak were tabbed to the Second Team. Head Coach Jordan Levine was named ECC Coach of the Year for the third straight year.

·        Last week, Kearnan and Umano were named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On April 27th, Heyder and Kipnes were tabbed to the USILA D2 Team of the Week.

·        On April 25th, Heyder was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and Kipnes was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week.

·        On April 18th, Scorcia was named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On April 11th, Fitzgerald was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Kearnan, graduate student Marty Shargel and junior Mustapha Daffeh were tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        On March 28th, Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and Heyder and Gerdvil were tabbed to the Honor Roll. Kearnan was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week on Tuesday.

·        On March 21st, Umano was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time.

·        On March 14th, Kipnes was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Scorcia was named to the Honor Roll. Kipnes was also tabbed to the USILA Division II Team of the Week.

·        On March 7th, Pjatak and junior PJ Argiros were named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        Pjatak was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Scorcia and Kearnan were tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 28th. Kearnan was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week after having a team-high 11 points.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named Co-Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Gerdvil was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 9-1 during the 2021 season, winning their second straight ECC Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 2 in the USILA Coaches Poll and in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll. The rankings are both the highest in school history.

·        The Mavericks captured their third straight ECC Regular Season and Tournament Championships.

·        Mercy is making their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Mavericks are making their first-ever appearance in the Semifinals.

·        No sport in Mercy College history has ever advanced to the Championship Game.

·        The Mavericks have two NCAA Tournament wins in program history with both coming against Seton Hill.  

·        Mercy earned the No. 1 seed in the North Region for the first time and will be hosting a Semifinal game for the first time.

·        The Mavericks are 1-5 all-time against Le Moyne. Mercy's lone win came on February 17, 2019 by a score of 10-7 in Dobbs Ferry. The teams' last two meetings have both been decided by one goal. The Mavericks dropped an 8-7 decision to Le Moyne in Dobbs Ferry earlier this season on March 5th.

·        Mercy is 47-5 in their last 52 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·        Mercy has had 10 straight winning seasons and have qualified for the ECC Championship in seven straight seasons.

·        The Mavericks have won 21 straight games against ECC competition, with their last loss coming in the 2018 ECC Championship Semifinal.

·        Head Coach Jordan Levine recorded his 100th career win in the victory over Molloy on March 26th. He currently holds a 109-38 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Scorcia was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week once and is second on the team with 70 points on a team-high 48 goals with 22 assists. He is one goal shy of setting a new single-season school record. The graduate student became the third Maverick in program history to record 200 career points against Le Moyne on March 5th. He also now has a school-record 154 career goals. Kearnan leads the team with 75 points on 36 goals and a team-high 39 assists. He recorded his 200th career point in the win over Frostburg State on May 7th.

·        Eccles is fifth on the team with 32 points on 19 goals and 13 assists. Gibbons has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once this season and has 28 goals and 16 assists. Sophomore Andrew Calabria is sixth on the team with 26 points on 21 goals and five assists. Heyder is fourth on the team with 40 points by way of 27 goals and 13 assists.

·        Sophomore Brody Caskenette has 13 points on seven goals and six assists and junior Robert Guglielmo has four goals and eight assists.

·        The defense is led by Gerdvil who has 18 caused turnovers with 44 ground balls. Pjatak is third on the team with 17 caused turnovers and has 41 ground balls. Senior Sean Rigley was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 and has 13 caused turnovers and 16 ground balls. He was named the ECC Championship's Most Outstanding Player on May 7th. Kipnes was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year prior to the 2020 season and is fourth on the team with 16 caused turnovers. Fitzgerald leads the team with 19 caused turnovers.

·        Argiros has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and leads the team with 68 ground balls and is 121-203 (.596) on faceoffs this season. Sophomore Jason Kuehner is 93-153 (.608) on faceoffs with 41 ground balls. He went 23-for-30 on faceoffs with a career-high 12 ground balls in the win over Roberts Wesleyan on May 4th.

·        Senior Tommy Umano is a two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and is 15-1 in goal with 146 saves, a .584 save percentage and 8.20 goals-against average in 761:22 minutes of action. The senior recorded his 200th career save in the win over Seton Hill on March 20th.

·        Kearnan, Rigley, Gerdvil, Gibbons, Kipnes and Scorcia all earned Preseason All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse prior to this season.

Scouting the Dolphins

·        Le Moyne is coming off a 9-4 win at Adelphi in the Quarterfinals on Sunday. The Dolphins defeated Saint Anselm, 16-8, in the First Round on May 11th.

·        The Dolphins were picked first in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll after winning their sixth National Championship and 15th NE10 Title after going 15-0 last season.

·        Le Moyne is making their 16th appearance in the Semifinals in their 19th appearance overall in the NCAA Tournament. The Dolphins have not lost a road NCAA Tournament game since 2018 when they fell to Seton Hill.

·        The Dolphins are 51-6 in their last 57 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season and have not lost more than three games in a season since 1999.

·        Le Moyne is ranked No. 3 nationally in the USILA Poll and No. 7 in the latest Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        The Dolphins have won five straight NCAA Tournament games dating back to last year.

·        Le Moyne is led by USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Attackman of the Year and First Team All-NE10 selection graduate student Carter Collins who has a team-high 58 points on a team-high 38 goals with 20 assists. First Team All-NE10 selection fifth year senior Zach Pierce is second on the team with 57 points on 31 goals and a team-high 26 assists.

·        USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player of the Year and Midfielder of the Year Ben McCreary has 26 goals and seven assists and was named Second Team All-NE10.

·        The defense is led by USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Defenseman of the Year and First Team All-NE10 selection graduate student Nate Arnold who has a team-high 23 caused turnovers with 36 ground balls.

·        First Team All-NE10 recipient senior Sam Kury is 165-265 (.623) on faceoffs with a team-high 97 ground balls. Senior Nico Mattia is 87-145 (.600) on faceoffs with 49 ground balls.

·        Graduate student Frank Delia was named NE10 Goalkeeper of the Year and is 16-3 in goal with 182 saves, a .595 save percentage and 7.34 goals-against average.
