Game Preview: No. 4 Softball Plays at No. 1 STAC in ECC Softball Championship on Wednesday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 2, 2022) – The No. 4 seed Mercy College softball team plays at No. 1 seed St. Thomas Aquinas College in an ECC Softball Championship matchup on Wednesday, May 4th at 3 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        The Mavericks are coming off a 5-4 loss and 6-5 win over Staten Island on Saturday. Mercy was led by freshman Maddie Lula who had a team-high three RBI on the day.

·        Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 17-14 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2018. The Mavericks went 15-9 in ECC play a year ago.

·        The Mavericks have secured their second straight ECC Championship appearance and are looking to win their first ECC Championship since 2017.

·        Mercy split the season series with the Spartans, earning doubleheader splits on April 10th and April 19th.

·        Junior Samantha Franck was named ECC Player of the Week and junior Alexi Benson was tabbed Pitcher of the Week on April 18th.

·        On April 11th, Franck was named to the ECC Honor Roll and on April 4th junior Sydney Johnston was named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On March 7th, sophomore Shannon Sisco, Crawford and freshman Maddie Lula were named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        Sisco was named ECC Player of the Week, Benson was tabbed Pitcher of the Week, freshman Victoria Seppala was named Rookie of the Week and senior Ariana Ricci was named to the Honor Roll on February 21st.

·        Sisco is hitting a team-high .368 with a team-high 28 runs with 46 hits to go along with 12 RBI. Lula has 32 hits, 14 runs, a team-high four home runs with 13 RBI and Crawford is hitting .319 with a team-high 51 hits and 22 stolen bases. She also has 26 runs, 13 RBI and five doubles. The senior recorded her 100th career hit against D'Youville on April 15th.

·        Franck has 41 hits with a team-high 26 RBI and nine doubles to go along with three home runs and Ricci has 14 RBI with 15 runs scored. Johnston is second on the team with 17 RBI and is hitting .265.

·        Benson is 9-16 in the circle with a 3.12 ERA in 146.0 innings with 127 strikeouts. She recorded her 200th career strikeout in the win over Queens on April 21st. Senior Sabrina Gonzalez has pitched 84.1 innings with 37 strikeouts and is 2-11 with a 5.89 ERA in 14 starts. Junior Angelina Oquendo is 0-4 in the circle with a 5.08 ERA in 41.1 innings with 19 strikeouts.  

·        Crawford, graduate student Danielle Burgos and junior Sydney Johnston were named First Team All-ECC last season.

Scouting the Spartans

·        The Spartans are coming off a 3-0 win over Queens in their regular season finale on Sunday.

·        The Spartans were picked third in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 24-13 last year, making their first-ever appearance in the final of the ECC Championship.

·        STAC won their first-ever ECC Regular Season Championship and are looking for their first ECC Tournament Championship.

·        The Spartans are 17-2 at home entering Wednesday's game.

·        Three-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Abbie Landrum leads the Spartans at the plate with a .362 average. She has 42 hits, 18 runs and 24 RBI. The freshman is also 12-13 in the circle with a 2.71 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 142 innings.

·        Two-time ECC Player of the Week and one-time Pitcher of the Week senior Carissa Della Vecchia is hitting .362 with 23 RBI and 28 runs scored. She also has a team-high 15 doubles with three home runs. Junior Emilie Olivier has a team-high 34 RBI and six home runs and senior Amanda Castro has 18 RBI and two home runs.

·        Della Vecchia is 15-6 in the circle with a 2.74 ERA in 148 innings with 212 strikeouts.
