Game Preview: Men's Lacrosse Faces Tampa in First-Ever National Championship Game Appearance on Sunday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 25, 2022) – The No. 1 seeded Mercy College men's lacrosse team faces No. 1 seeded University of Tampa in the Division II Men's Lacrosse National Championship Game on Sunday, May 29th at 4 p.m. at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off a 12-11 double-overtime win over Le Moyne on Sunday to advance to the National Championship Game for the first time in program history.

·        Seniors Brady Kearnan and Jack Gibbons were named First Team All-Region by the USILA, graduate student Dominic Scorcia, seniors Tommy Umano and Jack Kipnes and junior Justin Gerdvil were named to the Second Team, senior Sean Rigley and sophomore Tyler Pjatak were tabbed to the Third Team and graduate student Matt Eccles, junior PJ Argiros and sophomore Damiano Ferrara received Honorable Mention accolades. The 11 All-Region selections are a school record.

·        Kearnan was tabbed First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine and Gibbons and Gerdvil were named Second Team All-American.

·        Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Year, Gerdvil was named Defensive Player of the Year and Umano was named Goalkeeper of the Year. Kearnan, Gerdvil, Umano, Scorcia, Kipnes, Gibbons and Jake Fitzgerald and sophomore Andrew Calabria were named First Team All-ECC. Eccles, junior TJ Heyder and Pjatak were tabbed to the Second Team. Head Coach Jordan Levine was named ECC Coach of the Year for the third straight year.

·        On May 2nd, Kearnan and Umano were named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On April 27th, Heyder and Kipnes were tabbed to the USILA D2 Team of the Week.

·        On April 25th, Heyder was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and Kipnes was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week.

·        On April 18th, Scorcia was named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On April 11th, Fitzgerald was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Kearnan, graduate student Marty Shargel and junior Mustapha Daffeh were tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        On March 28th, Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and Heyder and Gerdvil were tabbed to the Honor Roll. Kearnan was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week on Tuesday.

·        On March 21st, Umano was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time.

·        On March 14th, Kipnes was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Scorcia was named to the Honor Roll. Kipnes was also tabbed to the USILA Division II Team of the Week.

·        On March 7th, Pjatak and Argiros were named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        Pjatak was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Scorcia and Kearnan were tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 28th. Kearnan was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week after having a team-high 11 points.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named Co-Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Gerdvil was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 9-1 during the 2021 season, winning their second straight ECC Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 2 in the USILA Coaches Poll and in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll. The rankings are both the highest in school history.

·        The Mavericks captured their third straight ECC Regular Season and Tournament Championships.

·        Mercy is making their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Mavericks are making their first-ever appearance in the National Championship Game.

·        Men's Lacrosse is the first sport in Mercy College history to advance to the National Championship Game.

·        The Mavericks are looking to win their first-ever National Championship and first National Championship in any sport.

·        Mercy earned the No. 1 seed in the North Region for the first time and hosted Quarterfinal and Semifinal games for the first time.

·        The Mavericks are facing Tampa for the first time in program history.

·        Mercy is 48-5 in their last 53 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·        The Mavericks enter Sunday's game on a 13-game winning streak, which is tied for the longest in program history.

·        Mercy has had 10 straight winning seasons and have qualified for the ECC Championship in seven straight seasons.

·        Mercy becomes the first ECC school to play for the national title since LIU Post in 2014. The last ECC school to win the national championship was Dowling in 2012.

·        The Mavericks have won 21 straight games against ECC competition, with their last loss coming in the 2018 ECC Championship Semifinal.

·        Mercy has never defeated a No. 1 nationally-ranked team in program history.

·        Head Coach Jordan Levine recorded his 100th career win in the victory over Molloy on March 26th. He currently holds a 110-38 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Scorcia was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week once and is second on the team with 73 points on a team-high 51 goals with 22 assists. He set a single-season school record for goals on Sunday and scored the game-winning goal in double overtime against Le Moyne on Sunday. The graduate student became the third Maverick in program history to record 200 career points against Le Moyne on March 5th. He also now has a school-record 157 career goals. Kearnan leads the team with 80 points on 38 goals and a team-high 42 assists. He recorded his 200th career point in the win over Frostburg State on May 7th.

·        Eccles is fifth on the team with 35 points on 22 goals and 13 assists. Gibbons has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once this season and has 30 goals and 17 assists. Sophomore Andrew Calabria is sixth on the team with 27 points on 21 goals and six assists. Heyder is fourth on the team with 40 points by way of 27 goals and 13 assists.

·        Sophomore Brody Caskenette has 14 points on eight goals and six assists and junior Robert Guglielmo has four goals and eight assists.

·        The defense is led by Gerdvil who has a team-high-tying 19 caused turnovers with 45 ground balls. Pjatak is third on the team with 17 caused turnovers and has 45 ground balls. Senior Sean Rigley was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 and has 14 caused turnovers and 16 ground balls. He was named the ECC Championship's Most Outstanding Player on May 7th. Kipnes was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year prior to the 2020 season and is fourth on the team with 16 caused turnovers. Fitzgerald has a team-high-tying 19 caused turnovers with 24 ground balls.

·        Argiros has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and leads the team with 74 ground balls and is 135-227 (.595) on faceoffs this season. Sophomore Jason Kuehner is 94-157 (.599) on faceoffs with 41 ground balls. He went 23-for-30 on faceoffs with a career-high 12 ground balls in the win over Roberts Wesleyan on May 4th.

·        Senior Tommy Umano is a two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and is 16-1 in goal with 162 saves, a .585 save percentage and 8.36 goals-against average in 825:45 minutes of action. The senior recorded his 300th career save in the win over Le Moyne on Sunday after making a game-high 16 saves.

·        Kearnan, Rigley, Gerdvil, Gibbons, Kipnes and Scorcia all earned Preseason All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse prior to this season.

Scouting the Spartans

·        Tampa is coming off a 19-8 win over Limestone on Sunday to advance to the National Championship Game for the first time.

·        The Spartans were picked first in the Sunshine State Conference Coaches' Poll after going 10-1 and advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

·        Tampa is ranked No. 1 nationally in both the USILA Poll and Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Polls.

·        The Spartans are looking for their first-ever National Championship.

·        Tampa has made the NCAA Tournament eight times in program history with all eight coming in the last eight seasons the tournament was held.

·        The last South Region team to win the national championship was Limestone in 2017. Limestone was coached by J.B. Clarke in 2017 who is now the head coach at Tampa.

·        Tampa is led by senior Colin White who has a team-high 72 points on a team-high 51 goals with 21 assists. He also has 52 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. Junior Harry Kilkowski is second on the team with 65 points on 27 goals and a team-high 38 assists.

·        Senior Luke McAnaney has 62 points on 46 goals and 16 assists and USA Lacrosse Magazine Third Team All-American senior Owen Miller has 32 goals and 15 assists.

·        USA Lacrosse Magazine First Team All-American junior Matthew Beddow has a team-high 45 caused turnovers with 74 ground balls and senior Sean Nizolek was named Third Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine.

·        Junior Hunter Turner is 257-for-439 (.585) on faceoffs with a team-high 122 ground balls.

·        First Team All-American junior Blake Ulmer is 20-0 in goal with 289 saves, a .637 save percentage and 8.86 goals-against average in 20 starts.
