Scouting the Mavericks
· The Mavericks are coming off a 9-2 loss to Dominican on Wednesday. Mercy was led by graduate student Robert Wootten who had a team-high two RBI.
· Mercy was picked third in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 18-11 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Mavericks set a school record with 14 ECC wins and had their first winning record overall since 1990.
· The Mavericks have secured their second straight ECC Championship berth and currently sit in a tie for second in the ECC standings with Queens.
· Mercy has now recorded 20 or more wins in three of the six seasons Chris Schoen has been head coach.
· Freshman Jaden Caballero was named ECC Rookie of the Week for the second time on Monday and ECC Player of the Week on February 21st and is hitting .360 with 58 hits to go along with three home runs and 24 RBI. He also has 33 runs and a team-high 20 stolen bases and 12 doubles in 42 games.
· Senior Jonathan Diforio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on February 21st and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is 5-3 on the mound with a 4.88 ERA in 72 innings pitched with 48 strikeouts. Freshman Scott Scheppy has pitched 63 innings and has 33 strikeouts with a team-best 4.29 ERA. He picked up his first collegiate win in the game one win over Lincoln on April 16th.
· Wootten was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week and Wootten and senior Nikko Liguori were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on February 21st. Wootten has 29 RBI and 28 runs scored on the year with a team-high four triples. Liguori has 10 RBI, 15 runs and is batting .295 on the year.
· Junior Justin Glennerster has a home run and 25 RBI on the year and the reigning ECC Rookie of the Year junior Nolan Giblin is hitting a team-high .374 with a team-high 32 RBI, 35 runs, and six home runs. He also is second on the team with 55 hits and is third on the team with 10 stolen bases. Senior James Mattutat is fifth on the team with 21 RBI and has five home runs.
· Freshman Alfred Hoti was named ECC Rookie of the Week on March 14th and has nine RBI in 25 games.
· Junior Anthony Burgio was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on March 21st and was named Second Team All-ECC last season. He has pitched 51 innings this season with a 4.94 ERA, a team-high 49 strikeouts, a 3-4 record and one save. Junior Kevin Seckler was named ECC Pitcher of the Week on Monday and is 4-1 on the bump in 54.2 innings with 29 strikeouts and a 4.61 ERA in 13 appearances. Graduate student Kuzari Jocelyn is 2-1 with three saves and a 2.50 ERA in 18.0 innings with 11 strikeouts.
· Mercy is looking to win the season series with Queens for the second straight year.
· The Mavericks are hitting .273 as a team and have a 5.64 team ERA through 42 games.
Scouting the Knights
· Queens is coming off a 7-6 win over Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday.
· The Knights were picked fifth in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 14-13 last season, advancing to the ECC Championship.
· Queens is ranked eighth in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll.
· The Knights have now qualified for the ECC Championship in each of the last three years it has been held.
· Leading Queens at the plate is three-time ECC Player of the Week Lou Antos who is batting an ECC-best .444 with 32 RBI and an ECC-best seven home runs. Four-time ECC Rookie of the Week Marc Cisco is second in the ECC hitting .433 with an ECC-high 42 RBI, 40 runs and seven home runs.
· Jayson Rodopoulos has a team-high 15 stolen bases and is hitting .346 with 14 RBI. Matt Filip is hitting .278 and is second on the team with 38 RBI. He also has five home runs on the year.
· The pitching staff is led by Julien Arcos who is 4-2 with a team-best 3.41 ERA in a team-high 63.1 innings pitched with 65 strikeouts. One-time ECC Pitcher of the Week Liam Pulsipher is 4-5 on the mound with 59 strikeouts and a 5.33 ERA in 52.1 innings. Danny Gargano is 1-2 with a 2.38 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.
· Queens is hitting .292 as a team and has a 4.41 team ERA through 36 games.
