FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 9, 2022) – Despite an RBI from junior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 10-4 decision to ECC foe Queens College in their regular season finale on Monday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium.
The Mavericks (21-23-1, 14-7 ECC) have secured the No. 3 seed in this week's ECC Championship and will face the Knights (24-15, 15-6 ECC), who secured the No. 2 seed, on Thursday, May 12th at 3 p.m. at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, New York.
Glennerster went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Caballero went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) and graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC) both went 1-for-3 with a run and sophomore Jared Hernandez (Moca, P.R./Friends University) went 1-for-4 with a run. Freshman Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) pitched three innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Queens was led by Lou Antos who went 2-for-4 with three runs, two home runs and four RBI. Jordan Sanabria pitched four innings to earn the win and Dylan Hughes pitched two innings to earn the save.
Mercy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. After a pair of strikeouts to start the game, Giblin and Wootten singled to put runners on first and second. Senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) then reached on an error by the right fielder, allowing Giblin and Wootten to score to give Mercy a 2-0 lead. Glennerster then doubled home Mattutat to make it 3-0.
Queens answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-3 lead. The Knights added a run in the third and three runs in the fourth to take an 8-3 lead.
Mercy got a run back in the fifth inning when Hernandez singled and scored on a Caballero double to make it 8-4.
Queens added on two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-4 lead. Mercy was unable to score in the seventh, giving the Knights the win.
Mercy had five hits and four errors and Queens had 12 hits and two errors.
