NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Aug, 28, 2022) – Despite a game-high two shots on goal from graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech), the RV Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Franklin Pierce University on Sunday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.
The Mavericks (0-1) drop their season opener for the first time since 2019, while the Ravens (2-0) remain unbeaten on the season.
Bermudez had two shots on goal and three shots overall. Freshman Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made one save to take the loss.
Franklin Pierce was led by Anna Crapanzano who had a goal and by Gianna Derose who dished out an assist. Emilie Fox made three saves in the first half to earn the win.
Bermudez recorded the game's first shot on goal in the 4th minute of action. The Ravens scored the game's lone goal in the 9th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Bermudez, Jessica Hoyt, and Marlene Avalos forced Fox to make saves in the opening half, but Mercy was unable to score. Franklin Pierce headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Bermudez and Emma Best (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) recorded shots on goal in the second half, but the Mavericks were not able to find the equalizer and the Ravens earned the 1-0 win.
Mercy held an 11-5 edge in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Franklin Pierce held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, August 31st when they host Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.
