DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2022) – Powered by the game-winning goal from sophomore Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) in the 53rd minute, the Mercy College field hockey team opened its 2022 season with a 3-2 win over Molloy University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-0) win their season opener for the second straight season, while the Lions (1-2) fall below .500 on the year.
Volz scored the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute and graduate student Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and junior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) each had a goal and an assist. Graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made two saves to earn the win.
Molloy was led by Gianna Mastrocco and Cat Amini who scored and by Gianna Festa who made four saves.
The game remained scoreless until the 14th minute when Cat Amini scored off an Alexis Denis assist to give Molloy a 1-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Mercy evened the score at 1-1 in the 17th minute following a Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) penalty corner. A Palladino shot was deflected in by Sacco after the Fitzgerald corner to tie the game at 1-1. The score remained 1-1 heading into halftime.
It stayed 1-1 until the final minute of play in the third quarter when Palladino fired home a cross from Sacco to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead after three quarters.
Molloy evened the score at 2-2 in the 52nd minute following a Mastrocco goal. The game remained tied for less than a minute when Molloy committed a foul that led to a Mercy penalty stroke attempt. Volz connected on the stroke to put the Mavericks up, 3-2.
Mercy held the Lions without a shot on goal for the remainder of the contest to earn the win.
Mercy held a 10-5 edge in shots and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Molloy held a 10-7 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 24th when they play at Bentley at 2 p.m.
