WALTHAM, Mass. (Sept. 24, 2022) – Despite a game-high seven saves from graduate student Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to Bentley University in their NE10 opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (1-1, 0-1 NE10) drop their first game of the season, while the Falcons (3-3, 2-0 NE10) remain unbeaten in NE10 play.
Mercy was led by Viscione who had seven saves on the day and now has 303 for her career. She is the third goalkeeper in program history to record 300 saves. Junior Rachel Palladino (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) recorded the Mavericks lone shot on goal and had a team-high three shots.
Bentley was led by Lida Coco and Caroline Szatkowski who both scored. Madison Clark made one save to earn the win.
The Falcons scored just 34 seconds into the game on a Coco drive from 12 yards out to give Bentley a 1-0 lead. Viscione made two saves in the opening quarter to keep the Mavericks down just 1-0 after one quarter of play.
Palladino recorded the lone shot on goal in the second quarter following a Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) penalty corner, but Clark made a save to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.
Bentley made it 2-0 with a late goal in the third quarter. Szatkowski redirected the ball into the cage after a Madison Halas drive to give the Falcons a two-goal lead.
Viscione made four saves in the fourth quarter to keep the game at 2-0, but Bentley would come away with the win.
Bentley held a 16-4 edge in shots and a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. Bentley held a 10-4 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 5th when they play at Southern Connecticut State at 7 p.m.
