WILMINGTON, Del. (Sept. 3, 2022) – Powered by senior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College) recording her 1,000th career assist as a Maverick, the Mercy College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-9) victory over Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday afternoon at the Jones Center.
The Mavericks (4-0) start 4-0 for the first time since 2001 and have won three of their last four meetings against the Lightning (0-6).
Gonzalez had a match-high 35 assists and now has 1,034 assists as a Maverick. She added nine digs and senior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) had a match-high 17 kills with seven digs. Senior Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had a match-high 10 digs and junior Anyelainy Vizcaino Araujo (Santo Domingo Oeste, D.R./Southwestern CC) had 10 kills and eight digs. Senior Stéphanie Lankhorst (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Koninklijke Scholengemeenschap Apeldoorn) had seven kills and senior Julia Pomerleau (Portland, Maine/University of Southern Maine) had six kills. Senior Tanializ Rivera (Carolina, P.R./Concordia College) had five kills and six digs.
Goldey-Beacom was led by Shayla Boyce who had a team-high six kills.
Mercy scored the first four points of the first set to take a 4-0 lead. The Lightning later cut the Mavericks lead to 9-7 before Mercy rattled off five straight points to take a 14-7 lead. The score was later 22-15 in favor of Mercy before a Goldey-Beacom service error and Vizcaino Araujo kill made it 24-15. The Lightning made it 24-16 before a Lankhorst kill gave Mercy a 25-16 set one win.
The Mavericks jumped out to an 11-4 lead in set two after back-to-back kills from Schneid and a kill from Pomerleau. Goldey-Beacom made it 12-8 before the Mavericks tallied five straight points, finished off by a Schneid kill, to take a 17-8 lead. The Lightning cut the deficit to seven, 18-11, but Mercy recorded four straight points to increase the lead to 22-11. The Mavericks closed the set with three of the final four points to earn a 25-12 set two win after a Schneid kill.
Mercy held a 14-9 lead in set three and ended the set with 11 straight points, capped off by a Pomerleau and Gonzalez block, to take the third set, 25-9, winning their fourth straight match to open the season.
Mercy hit .407 with 45 kills, 42 digs, six blocks and seven aces and Goldey-Beacom hit .000 with 17 kills, 33 digs, zero blocks and three aces.
Head Coach Ana Todorovic and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, September 13th when they play at American International at 7 p.m.
