Anaya, Schwenkler, Washington and Dixon Lead Women's Soccer to 2-1 Win Over Southern Connecticut State

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 10, 2023) – Powered by a game-winning save on a penalty kick in the 89th minute by sophomore Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly), two assists from senior Skyler Schwenkler (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) and goals from junior Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J./University of Bridgeport) and sophomore Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-3-3) improve to 3-0 at home and defeat the Owls (4-4-4) for the seventh straight time.

Mercy was led by Anaya who made five saves to earn the win. Schwenkler assisted on both goals and now has two assists on the year. Washington and Dixon both netted their second goals of the season.

Southern Connecticut State was led by Kelsey Burr who scored and by Abby Aughe who made a game-high six saves.

The game remained scoreless until the 17th minute when Schwenkler sent a ball from just inside midfield from left to right, finding a streaking Washington, who fired the ball into the lower left corner of the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.

Burr would tie the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick goal in the 20th minute after a Mercy handball in the box. Freshman Ella Gallino (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) hit the crossbar in the 42nd minute and Dixon forced Aughe to make a save on the ensuing rebound, but the score remained 1-1 at halftime.

Aughe made three saves in the second half before Dixon found the back of the net in the 77th minute, following a cross from Schwenkler, giving Mercy a 2-1 lead.

Anaya made three more saves to keep Mercy ahead but made her biggest save of the game in the 89th minute on a Taylor Hennig penalty kick. Hennig attempted to find the lower left corner of the net, but Anaya made a diving save to keep the Mavericks ahead 2-1. Mercy would hold on for the win after the key save from Anaya.

Mercy held a 21-10 edge in shots and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at 3-3.
