Scouting the Mavericks
The Mavericks earned a 1-0 win over Molloy in their last game on Saturday. Mercy is coming off a season in which they went 14-3-2 and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. The Mavericks won their third ECC Tournament Championship and their first outright Regular Season Championship. Mercy looks to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season and make the ECC Championship for the 10th straight season. The Mavericks ended the 2022 season receiving votes nationally in the United Soccer Coaches poll and begin the 2023 season receiving votes. Mercy was picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll and return three of their top five goal scorers from last season. They also return eight student-athletes who started at least 10 matches for the 2022 squad. Senior Kayla Camacho was named the ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after finishing second in the conference with 11 goals and 27 points a year ago en route to All-Conference First Team honors and All-Region accolades. Also returning is reigning ECC Goalkeeper of the Year sophomore Kamy Anaya who went 13-3-2 last season with 45 saves, a .789 save percentage and 0.70 goals-against average. Last year's ECC Rookie of the Year Ancksu Dixon also returns after recording a team-high 33 points on 11 goals and 11 assists. Head Coach Jack Nicholson also returns All-Conference honorees in graduate student Tyra Anderson and seniors Skyler Schwenkler, Jennifer Silva, and Madison Rosa. Mercy has been led by sophomore Maleah Tarin who has been named ECC Rookie of the Week twice and has a team-high four goals and eight points. Dixon has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and has two goals and one assist. She scored the game-winning goal against Southern Connecticut State. Rosa scored the game-winning goal against Dominican on September 6th and has two goals on the year. Junior Amiah Washington also has two goals on the year and freshman Angelina Ortiz netted her first collegiate goal in the win over Dominican. Senior Marlene Avalos has a goal and an assist and Camacho and Schwenkler both have a team-high two assists on the year. Anderson, Silva and junior Valeria Rodriguez all have an assist. Anaya is 5-3-3 in goal with 36 saves, a .766 save percentage and 1.00 goals-against average. She has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on October 16th. Tarin was named to the ECC Honor Roll on October 9th. The Mavericks are 4-4 in their last eight meetings against Wilmington and have won three of the last four meetings.
Scouting the Wildcats
Wilmington is coming off a 1-1 draw against Chestnut Hill on Tuesday. The Wildcats were picked seventh in the CACC Preseason Poll after going 5-8-5 last season. Wilmington is 4-0 on the road this season and is currently ranked sixth in the United Soccer Coaches East Region Top 10 poll. The Wildcats are led by redshirt sophomore Manuela Restrepo who has a team-high 26 points on a team-high nine goals and eight assists. Redshirt freshman Evelyn Payne and junior Brianna Wons both have 10 points on four goals and two assists and junior Emilie Larsen has three goals and one assist. Junior Mio Nakajima is 7-2-3 in goal with 43 saves, a .811 save percentage and 0.85 goals-against average.
