Volz Scores as Field Hockey Plays at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2023) – Despite a goal from junior Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 6-1 decision to NE10 foe Pace University on Wednesday afternoon at Finnerty Field.

The Mavericks (3-7, 2-4 NE10) have dropped five games in a row and fall to 0-3 all-time at the Setters (6-5, 3-3 NE10).

Volz netted her third goal of the season and junior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) made four saves in 15:27 minutes of action to take the loss. Sophomore Rebecca McClure (Canastota, N.Y./Pace University) made a game-high seven saves in the final 44:33 minutes of action.

Pace was led by Krista Dietz who had a game-high two goals and three assists. Celeste Pagliaroli made six saves in 54:41 minutes of action to earn the win.

The Setters took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute of action after Giordano stopped a Dietz shot and Francesca Fava put home the rebound to give Pace the early lead. Giordano made two more saves before Katelyn Fairhurst scored in the 13th minute to give the Setters a 2-0 lead. Dietz netted her first goal of the game in the final minute of the opening quarter to give Pace a 3-0 lead after one quarter of play.

Senior Rieley Fitzgerald (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) recorded the Mavericks first two shots on goal in the second quarter. Dietz gave the Setters a 4-0 lead in the 25th minute and Fava made it 5-0 in the 26th minute. Pace headed into halftime with a 5-0 lead.

McClure made two saves to open the third quarter before Ella Tamweber scored to give the Setters a 6-0 lead in the 38th minute. The score remained 6-0 at the end of the third quarter.

McClure stopped three more shots in the fourth quarter before Volz scored in the 55th minute to make it 6-1. Mercy could not find the back of the cage again and the Setters earned the 6-1 win.

Pace held a 26-11 edge in shots and a 17-8 edge in shots on goal. Pace also held a 15-8 edge in penalty corners.

Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 7th when they host Bentley at 12 p.m.
