Game Preview: No. 2/3 Men's Lacrosse Plays at No. 4/8 Le Moyne on Sunday

DOBB FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2023) – The No. 2/3 Mercy College men's lacrosse team plays at No. 4/8 Le Moyne College on Sunday, February 19th at 12 p.m.

Mercy earned a 12-11 double-overtime win over Le Moyne in an NCAA National Semifinal matchup on May 22, 2022.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off a 21-12 win over Saint Rose on Wednesday. The nine-goal margin of victory is the largest for the Mavericks in 10 all-time meetings against the Golden Knights. Mercy improved to 10-0 all-time against Saint Rose. The Mavericks were led by senior Brady Kearnan who had a game-high-tying six goals with three assists. Graduate student Jack Gibbons netted four goals and senior Robert Guglielmo had three goals. Senior Justin Gerdvil recorded four caused turnovers and eight ground balls, recording his 100th career ground ball in the process.

·        Kearnan has a team-high 18 points on a team-high 10 goals and eight assists with four caused turnovers. Jack Gibbons has eight goals and one assist on the season and graduate student Thomas Connors is third on the team with seven points on four goals and three assists. Junior Greg Gibbons has four points on two goals and two assists and senior TJ Heyder has five goals. Guglielmo has three goals and one assist and junior Andrew Calabria has a goal and two assists. Freshman Devon Duchnowski has three goals and sophomore Ian Votta and freshmen Connor Abrahall and Anthony Barone have two goals.

·        The defense has been led by Gerdvil who has a team-high-tying four caused turnovers with a team-high nine ground balls. Sophomore Daniel Mcloughlin has three caused turnovers and graduate student Jake Fitzgerald has three caused turnovers. Junior Jason Kuehner is 30-of-45 on faceoffs with eight ground balls and a goal. Graduate student Tommy Umano is 2-0 in goal with eight saves, a .444 save percentage and 8.63 goals-against average.

·        Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and Barone was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week on Monday. Jack Gibbons was also tabbed to the Honor Roll. Kuehner was named to the USILA Team of the Week on Tuesday.

·        Mercy has started 2-0 for the fifth straight season.

·        The Mavericks look to start 3-0 for the third straight year.

·        Mercy is 2-5 all-time against Le Moyne and is 0-3 all-time at Le Moyne.

·        The Mavericks are ranked No. 2 nationally in the USILA poll and No. 3 nationally in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll. Mercy was ranked No. 2 nationally in the preseason for the first time in program history.

·        Mercy was picked to finish first in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and graduate student Jack Kipnes was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

·        The Mavericks made their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season and advanced to the National Championship Game for the first time last season. Mercy also won their third straight ECC Regular Season and Tournament Championships last season.

·        Mercy has had 10 straight winning seasons and have qualified for the ECC Championship in seven straight seasons.

·        The Mavericks are 50-6 in their last 56 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·        Kearnan was named to the Inside Lacrosse Player of the Year Watch List on February 10th and Kearnan, senior Justin Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes and graduate student Tommy Umano were tabbed USILA Preseason All-Americans on February 1st.

·        Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes, junior Tyler Pjatak and Umano were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans on January 27th.

·        Gibbons was named USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Midfielder of the Year and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Kipnes, Umano and Pjatak were tabbed to the Preseason All-American Teams.

Scouting the Dolphins

·        Le Moyne was picked second in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 16-4 last season.

·        The Dolphins are looking to win their season opener for the fourth straight season.  

·        Le Moyne is 5-2 all-time against Mercy.

·        The Dolphins are ranked No. 4 nationally in the USILA poll and No. 8 nationally in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.

·        Le Moyne loses seven of their top eight scorers from a year ago.

·        The Dolphins have won six National Championships with the last coming in 2021.

·        Leading the returners for Le Moyne is graduate student Kevin Sheehan who had 20 goals, 18 assists and 38 points last season in 20 games. Sophomore Ryan Eisenmann also returns after recording 14 goals and four assists in 11 games last season.

·        Senior Nick Noel returns on defense after ranking second on the team with 11 caused turnovers last season. He also had 40 ground balls and one goal. USILA Preseason First Team All-American John Galimi also returns for the Dolphins.

·        Graduate student Nico Mattia went 92-of-154 on faceoffs last season with 52 ground balls and seniors Hayden Hoerner and Max Tedesco return in goal after combining for 22 saves last season.
