Game Preview: No. 6 Men's Lacrosse Plays at Georgian Court on Wednesday

DOBB FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2023) – The No. 6 Mercy College men's lacrosse team plays at Georgian Court University on Wednesday, February 22nd at 3 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 10-8 loss to No. 4/8 Le Moyne on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by senior Brady Kearnan and graduate student Jack Gibbons who both had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist.

·         Kearnan has a team-high 21 points on a team-high 12 goals and nine assists with five caused turnovers and eight ground balls. He recorded his 100th career ground ball against Le Moyne on Sunday. Jack Gibbons has 10 goals and two assists on the season and graduate student Thomas Connors is third on the team with eight points on four goals and four assists. Junior Greg Gibbons has four points on two goals and two assists and senior TJ Heyder has six goals. Senior Robert Guglielmo has three goals and one assist and junior Andrew Calabria has three goals and two assists. Freshman Devon Duchnowski has three goals and sophomore Ian Votta and freshmen Connor Abrahall and Anthony Barone have two goals.

·         The defense has been led by senior Justin Gerdvil who has a team-high seven caused turnovers with a team-high 13 ground balls. Sophomore Daniel Mcloughlin and senior Zack Higgins both have three caused turnovers and graduate student Jake Fitzgerald has five caused turnovers. Junior Jason Kuehner is 36-of-58 on faceoffs with nine ground balls and a goal. Graduate student Tommy Umano is 2-1 in goal with 17 saves, a .459 save percentage and 9.27 goals-against average.

·         Kearnan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week and Gerdvil was named Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Gibbons was tabbed to the Honor Roll for the second straight week.

·         Barone was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week last week and Kuehner was named to the USILA Team of the Week last Tuesday.

·         Mercy has not lost two games in a row since the 2018 season.

·         Mercy is 7-0 all-time against Georgian Court and have won all but one of the matchups by double digits.

·         The Mavericks are ranked No. 6 nationally in the USILA poll and No. 6 nationally in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll. Mercy was ranked No. 2 nationally in the preseason for the first time in program history.

·         Mercy was picked to finish first in the ECC Preseason Poll and Kearnan was named ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and graduate student Jack Kipnes was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

·         The Mavericks made their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season and advanced to the National Championship Game for the first time last season. Mercy also won their third straight ECC Regular Season and Tournament Championships last season.

·         Mercy has had 10 straight winning seasons and have qualified for the ECC Championship in seven straight seasons.

·         The Mavericks are 50-7 in their last 57 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·         Kearnan was named to the Inside Lacrosse Player of the Year Watch List on February 10th and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes and Umano were tabbed USILA Preseason All-Americans on February 1st.

·         Kearnan, Gerdvil, Jack Gibbons, Kipnes, junior Tyler Pjatak and Umano were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans on January 27th.

·         Gibbons was named USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Midfielder of the Year and Kearnan, Gerdvil, Kipnes, Umano and Pjatak were tabbed to the Preseason All-American Teams.

Scouting the Lions

·         Georgian Court dropped a 19-4 decision to No. 16 Bentley on Saturday in their first game of the season.

·         The Lions were picked third in the CACC Preseason Poll after going 6-11 last season.

·         Georgian Court won the first two CACC Championships in 2018 and 2019.

·         The Lions are led by junior Tallen Smith who had a team-high two goals at Bentley on Saturday and by seniors Michael Ventresca and Justin Iannarone who both scored a goal.

·         Iannarone also went 8-of-21 on faceoffs with a team-high seven ground balls. Sophomore Joe Murphy and freshman Brendan Barnes each added a caused turnover.

·         In goal, Georgian Court is led by freshman Vincent Burkhart who made 15 saves in his debut against Bentley.
