MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 23, 2023) – Despite an RBI from senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) and junior Jared Hernandez (Moca, P.R./Friends University), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to RV Franklin Pierce University on Thursday night.
The Mavericks (2-4) fail to build off their win on Tuesday and fall to the Ravens (1-0) for the 11th straight time.
Ramirez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 3-for-4 with a run. Senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) went 2-for-4 and graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) went 1-for-3 with a run. Graduate student Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) pitched 6.1 innings with four runs allowed and five strikeouts to take the loss. Graduate student Ryan DeMille (Millstone, N.J./Dominican University) and junior Nelson Perez Jr. (Miami, Fla./Sussex County CC) combined to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Franklin Pierce was led by Julien Monks who went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Kyle Roche pitched 6.2 innings with one run allowed to earn the win. Jackson Walk pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn the save.
After a scoreless first inning, Franklin Pierce scored three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Max Gebauer recorded an RBI single and Monks drove in two more runs on a single.
The score remained 3-0 until the fourth inning when Mercy plated a run to make it 3-1. Sanders doubled and was brought home by a Ramirez double to get the Mavericks on the scoreboard.
Monks drove in another run in the seventh inning on a fielder's choice to give the Ravens a 4-1 lead. A Jose Savinon double in the eighth inning gave Franklin Pierce a 5-1 lead.
The Mavericks inched closer with a run in the eighth to make it 5-2. Schoen walked and advanced to third on a Sanders double. Hernandez later was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Schoen for Mercy's second run.
Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to give the Ravens the win.
Mercy had eight hits and no errors and Franklin Pierce had 11 hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face Felician at 12 p.m. in Myrtle Beach.
