Four Mavericks Record an RBI as Baseball Faces Felician

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 24, 2023) – Despite four different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Felician University on Friday afternoon.

The Mavericks (2-5) drop their second straight game and fall to the Golden Falcons (3-3) for the eighth straight time.

Mercy was led by senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and by junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) who went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Junior Jared Hernandez (Moca, P.R./Friends University) went 1-for-2 with an RBI and sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 2-for-4 with two runs and senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) went 1-for-3. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) pitched 4.2 innings with three runs allowed to earn a no-decision. Sanders allowed an unearned run in 0.1 innings of work to take the loss.

Felician was led by Anthony Lamar who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Logan Waltz pitched the final three innings to earn the win.

Mercy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Caballero led off the game with a single and later scored on a Sanders single to make it 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Felician scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Edwin Tavarez drove in the first run on a single and Lamar brought home the second run on a groundout. Dillon DiBartolomeo drove in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.

The Mavericks inched closer in the top of the sixth when Glennerster singled home Sanders to make it 3-2.

Mercy would retake the lead in the seventh inning, scoring three runs to take a 5-3 lead. Hernandez recorded an RBI single to bring home the first run of the inning, tying the game at 3-3. Gonzalez recorded a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Ramirez, giving Mercy a 4-3 lead. Caballero later scored on a passed ball to put the Mavericks up, 5-3.

Felician scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Lamar sacrifice fly to make it 5-4.

The Golden Falcons would score two runs in the bottom of the ninth to earn the 6-5 walk-off win. Lamar singled home the tying run and Julian Uejima brought home the winning run with two outs.

Mercy had nine hits and no errors and Felician had 10 hits and one error.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face No. 6/9 Southern New Hampshire for a doubleheader in Myrtle Beach at 2:30 p.m.
