MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 25, 2023) – Despite a home run in game one from junior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC), the Mercy College baseball team dropped 12-8 and 13-0 decisions to No. 6/9 Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (2-7) have dropped four games in a row and fall to the Penmen (6-1) for the 14th straight time.
Game 1: Southern N.H. 12, Mercy 8
The game remained scoreless until the second inning when Mercy scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) led off the inning with a single and senior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) walked before Sanders homered to right field to make it 3-0. The Penmen plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2.
The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the seventh when the Penmen exploded for nine runs on five hits to take an 11-3 lead after seven innings.
Mercy inched closer with three runs in the top of the eighth to make it 11-6. Sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) brought home the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 11-4. Freshman Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) later scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-5 and sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) singled home the final run of the inning to make it 11-6.
Southern N.H. added a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 12-6. The Mavericks scored two runs in the top of the ninth to make it 12-8, but could not score again to give the Penmen the game one win. Caballero singled home the first run of the inning and freshman John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) drove in the final run on a groundout. A flyout to right field ended the game.
Sanders went 1-for-4 with three RBI and his first home run as a Maverick. Caballero went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Glennerster went 2-for-4 with a run and graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) went 1-for-4. McAdams went 1-for-3 with two runs and junior Ryan Rozinski (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) pitched six innings with five runs allowed and eight strikeouts to take his second loss of the season.
Southern N.H. was led by Cam Caraher who went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Jeffrey Praml pitched seven innings with three runs allowed to earn the win.
Mercy had eight hits and no errors and Southern N.H. had 12 hits and no errors.
Game 2: Southern N.H. 13, Mercy 0
The Penmen opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.
Southern N.H. scored six more runs in the top of the second on just one hit to take an 8-0 lead.
The Penmen scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 12-0 lead and tacked on a run in the seventh to earn the 13-0 victory.
Caballero went 1-for-3 and junior Nelson Perez Jr. pitched 1.2 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had one hit and two errors and Southern N.H. had six hits and no errors.
The Penmen were led by Dyrenson Wouters who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. George Welch pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts to earn the win.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play Le Moyne at 9 a.m. in Myrtle Beach.
