Game Preview: Baseball Takes on Regionally-Ranked Pace This Weekend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 16, 2023) –The Mercy College baseball team plays at Pace University on Friday, March 17th at 1:30 p.m. The Mavericks then host the Setters on Saturday, March 18th for a doubleheader at 12 & 3 p.m. before playing at Pace on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Pace earned a 15-7 win over Mercy on April 27, 2022.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         The Mavericks are coming off a 2-0 win and 3-2 loss at Bridgeport on Sunday. Mercy was led by junior Ryan Rozinski who pitched five shutout innings to earn the win in game one.

·         Senior Nolan Giblin was named ECC Player of the Week on Monday and Rozinski was tabbed to the Honor Roll.  

·         Rozinski was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll last Monday.

·         Junior Gabe Sanders was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 27th.

·         Mercy was picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 21-25-1 last season, qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the second straight season. The Mavericks played in the ECC Championship last season for the first time since 2010.

·         Last season, the Mavericks tied a school record for most ECC wins with 14 and Mercy earned their third 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Chris Schoen.

·         The Mavericks upset #13/18 UNC Pembroke on February 21st by a score of 15-11. The Braves are the highest ranked team Mercy has beaten in seven seasons under Schoen.

·         Mercy is 2-7 in their last nine meetings against Pace.

·         Leading the returners for the Mavericks are sophomore Jaden Caballero who was named First Team All-ECC last season and graduate student Kevin Seckler, Giblin and sophomore Nathan Rodriguez who were tabbed Second Team All-ECC last season.

·         Leading the Mavericks at the plate so far this season is Caballero who was named to the ECC Honor Roll on February 20th and is hitting .290 with a team-high 18 hits to go along with nine RBI and a team-high 13 runs. Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez was also named to the Honor Roll on February 20th and has 10 RBI with 11 runs.

·         Sanders is hitting .302 on the year with a team-high-tying 10 RBI, a team-high one home run along with 10 runs scored. Giblin is hitting a team-high .315 with eight RBI and six runs scored.

·         Senior Justin Glennerster has five RBI and six runs. Graduate student Steven Schoen has nine runs and senior Janiel Ramirez has five RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by Rozinski who has made four starts on the mound with a team-best 4.29 ERA in 21.0 innings with 17 strikeouts. Graduate student Kevin Seckler has thrown a team-high-tying 21 innings in five appearances with 17 strikeouts. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez is 1-1 on the mound with 14 strikeouts in 15.2 innings and sophomore Scott Scheppy has thrown 14.0 innings in three starts. Junior Nelson Perez Jr. has made seven appearances out of the bullpen and has a 2.25 ERA in 8.0 innings with one save. Senior Ryan Dieguez has pitched 8.1 innings out of the bullpen and has a 4.32 ERA. Freshman Diego Wirz pitched three scoreless innings of relief against Bridgeport on Friday to earn his first collegiate win.

·         Mercy is hitting .242 as a team through the first 16 games of the season and is pitching to a 7.12 ERA.

Scouting the Setters

·         Pace is coming off an 11-1 loss to St. Cloud State on Wednesday.

·         The Setters were picked fifth in the NE10 Southwest Division Preseason Poll after going 23-20 last season.

·         Pace is ranked sixth in the NCBWA East Region Top 10 poll.

·         Pace is led at the plate by Mitchell McCabe who is hitting a team-best .349 with 13 runs, 11 RBI and one home run. Hunter Goldstein is second on the team with a .333 average and is tied for the team lead with 11 RBI.

·         Matthew Rinaldi hits .325 with nine RBI and a team-high five doubles and Nate Carminucci has eight RBI.

·         The pitching staff is led by Patrick Gleason who has a team-best 1.59 ERA in 17.0 innings with two wins and 13 strikeouts. Vincent Civitella has a 1.62 ERA in 16.2 innings with a team-high 24 strikeouts and two wins. Dan Brown has a 0.77 ERA in 11.2 innings with a team-high three saves.

·         Pace is hitting .297 as a team and has a 4.22 team ERA through 12 games.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Friday, March 24th when they host Molloy at 3 p.m.
