Caballero Records an RBI as Baseball Plays at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 17, 2023) – Despite an RBI from sophomore Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to regionally-ranked Pace University on Friday afternoon.

The Mavericks (4-13) have dropped two games in a row, while the Setters (11-2) have won two straight meetings against Mercy.

Caballero went 2-for-4 with an RBI and graduate student Steven Schoen (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Sacred Heart University) went 1-for-2 with a run. Senior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and sophomore Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) both went 1-for-3. Sophomore Scott Scheppy (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) pitched seven innings with two runs allowed and three strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Junior Nelson Perez Jr. (Miami, Fla./Sussex County CC) pitched 0.2 inning with a run allowed to take the loss.

Pace was led by Luke Rivara who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dan Brown pitched five scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the third when Mercy scored a run to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) was hit by a pitch and later scored on a Caballero double to make it 1-0. The Setters answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.

Mercy tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Schoen was hit by a pitch and Glennerster singled to put runners on first and third. Senior Janiel Ramirez (Windsor, Conn./The College of Saint Rose) then grounded into a double play, scoring Schoen, to tie the game at 2-2.

The score was tied at 2-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth when Pace scored a run to take a 3-2 lead. Hunter Goldstein led off the inning with a walk and later scored following a Rivara RBI single to give the Setters a 3-2 lead.

The Mavericks were unable to score in the ninth inning, giving Pace the 3-2 win.

Mercy had five hits and two errors and Pace had eight hits and one error.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Pace for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
